U.S. Men’s National Team Building Momentum After Dominant Victory

The United States Men’s National Team appears to have hit its stride, with a commanding victory over Paraguay signaling its potential as a formidable force. Former U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard expressed his confidence in the squad’s capabilities ahead of their upcoming match against Australia.

The recent 4-1 triumph against Paraguay not only showcased the team’s prowess but also captured the nation’s attention. The broadcast of the game drew an unprecedented 24.9 million viewers, marking the largest soccer audience in U.S. history.

Howard Highlights Key Strengths and Goalkeeping Decision

For Howard, a particularly encouraging aspect of the win was the sense that the U.S. team could have scored even more goals. “So many good things, so many contributions,” Howard stated. “It’s really good to win a game and say, ‘Gosh, I wish we almost had six.’ That’s a good place to be.”

He pointed to Folarin Balogun’s brace, Christian Pulisic’s impactful play in the attack, and a solid defensive performance as significant reasons for optimism as the tournament progresses. “There’s a lot to build on,” Howard added. “The substitutes came in and played well. Balogun got his two goals. Christian Pulisic was outstanding. I thought defensively we were good.”

Regarding the goalkeeping position, following Matt Freese’s start over veteran Matt Turner, Howard believes the competition is now settled. “I don’t think there’s any competition now,” he remarked. “I think Matt Freese is the goalkeeper. We sort of saw that going into the tournament over the last year. That played itself out. Matt Freese is the U.S. No. 1, end of story, I think.”

Anticipating a Physical Challenge Against Australia

Looking ahead, Howard anticipates a different kind of contest against Australia, acknowledging the opponent’s physical style. He cautioned that the U.S. must maintain its rhythm to counter any attempts to disrupt their play. “It’s going to be a physical game,” Howard noted. “I think the Australian team plays that way, but I think they also realize that if they get into the U.S. team and disrupt their rhythm, they give themselves a good chance.”

Despite the anticipated physicality, Howard remains optimistic about the matchup for the American side. “From a footballing standpoint, if you’re asking me right now, the U.S. team will play the Australians off the park,” he declared. “They just need to be able to match that physicality.”

Howard is confident in the team’s ability to find the back of the net. “If the U.S. matches that physicality, then I think the rest will take care of itself,” he predicted. “The U.S. scores three and wins. Maybe 3-1, maybe 3-0.”

The Role of Fan Support in Building Momentum

Beyond the on-field performance, Howard emphasized the crucial role of fan support in building momentum for the national team, particularly with the 2026 World Cup being hosted on home soil. He highlighted initiatives like the Jim Beam’s Home Field Advantage campaign, designed to foster a deeper soccer culture and energize supporters.

“There’s a cultural and togetherness aspect of soccer,” Howard explained. “We need to build this culture and hype around this team and help propel them, as best we can, on and off the field, toward greatness.”

He concluded by stressing that the atmosphere generated by fans can be as vital as the team’s on-field success. “They’re going to use the home-field advantage. They’re going to use that momentum as best they can. But it’s up to us as fans to provide that.”
