Measles Exposure Alert: LAX, Nearby Hotel Potential Contamination
Health Officials Warn of Potential Measles Exposure at LAX and Airport Hotel
Health authorities are investigating a confirmed measles case involving a traveler who arrived in Los Angeles County earlier this month, potentially exposing fellow passengers at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and guests at a nearby hotel. The traveler was identified as infectious during their time in the area.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed the investigation into the case, which is linked to Cathay Pacific Flight CX 884 that landed on June 11. This marks the sixth reported measles infection in the county this year, a concerning trend as summer travel intensifies and the region prepares to host international visitors for upcoming FIFA World Cup events.
Specific Exposure Details Released
Individuals who were present at the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on June 11 are considered potentially exposed. Additionally, health officials have identified a possible exposure at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel, located at 5711 W. Century Blvd., on the same day between 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is collaborating with local health departments to identify and notify passengers who were seated in proximity to the infected individual on the international flight. Those who may have been exposed at either location are advised to monitor for symptoms, which can appear between seven and 21 days after exposure. The period for symptom monitoring extends to July 2.
Importance of Vaccination Emphasized
Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Health Officer, underscored the importance of vaccination in light of rising measles cases. “As measles cases increase, it is important that residents take steps to make sure they are fully protected,” Dr. Davis stated. “The MMR vaccine is the safest and most reliable way to prevent measles and protect yourself, your family, and your community.”
Recognizing Measles Symptoms
Measles symptoms typically begin with a fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. This is often followed by a characteristic rash that usually starts on the face and then spreads across the rest of the body.
