Congressman Calls for Investigation into Elon Musk’s Role in Foreign Aid Reductions

A prominent congressman is calling for a thorough investigation into the actions of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, asserting that his spending cuts may have had devastating consequences for millions of children worldwide. Representative Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California, stated on Saturday that Musk should be held accountable for decisions that he believes potentially led to the deaths of approximately 4.5 million children through the dismantling of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) programs.

Khanna articulated his stance during an appearance on the “I’ve Had It” podcast. He suggested that if the Democratic Party regains control of either the House of Representatives or the Senate, they should prioritize holding Musk accountable. “I do believe once we take power, there needs to be accountability,” Khanna stated. “There needs to be accountability for Elon Musk. You know, they’re celebrating that he created 4,400 millionaires, but they don’t talk about the 4.5 million children around the world who he possibly sentenced to death by dismantling USAID.”

Allegations of Culpability and Calls for Subpoenas

The congressman elaborated on his concerns, emphasizing the need for Musk to directly address the impact of his decisions. “He needs to answer for that. He needs to be subpoenaed. He needs to face investigation. He needs to answer for what he did with DOGE [Department of Government Efficiency],” Khanna insisted. “It’s not just ‘let’s move on.'”

Podcast host Jennifer Welch echoed Khanna’s sentiments, agreeing with the call for an investigation and suggesting that Musk bears responsibility for the plight of millions due to government spending cuts enacted through DOGE. “I love that we need to keep pushing the talking point that you just had that we don’t need to celebrate Elon Musk making other people millionaires,” Welch remarked. “If you are the party of pro-life like you say you are, MAGA, he’s killing millions of the poorest people on the planet. So I think that hypocrisy there is really stunning.”

Broader Context of Wealth and Taxation

These accusations come at a time when Musk has faced renewed criticism from some Democratic politicians and media outlets following his ascent to becoming the world’s first trillionaire, solidified by SpaceX’s recent successful initial public offering. His immense wealth has positioned him as the world’s richest individual.

Khanna has been a vocal advocate for significant tax reform, particularly championing a proposal titled the “Make Billionaires Pay Their Fair Share Act.” This legislation aims to impose a direct 5% annual wealth tax on assets exceeding $1 billion, targeting ultra-wealthy individuals like Musk. This proposed tax would apply to accumulated wealth, not solely to income earned.

In March, Khanna issued a statement highlighting the economic disparities within the United States. “We have a deep economic divide in this country,” he said. “On one side, places like Silicon Valley are generating extreme wealth. On the other side, families are struggling to cover the cost of health care, housing, and basic needs. We can tax billionaires a modest amount to make sure everyone has a fair chance while keeping our innovative engine.”
