Oprah Winfrey has shared a poignant detail from the later years of Whitney Houston’s life, revealing an incident where the iconic singer fell from a stage during a 2009 taping of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” The media mogul recounted the event during a recent appearance at the Cannes Lions festival, where she was honored with the LionHeart Award.

A Difficult Performance

Winfrey explained that the fall occurred during what was likely Houston’s final appearance on her program. “She had gone back on drugs,” Winfrey stated, as seen in a clip shared by Variety. “The first interview I did with her… she was clean. But the day she came to my show to perform in front of the audience, she was not, and she fell off of the stage.”

The television legend emphasized the difficult position she was in, knowing the detrimental impact such a public stumble could have on Houston, who was already navigating a challenging period amid her well-documented struggles with addiction.

Protecting a Vulnerable Star

“I knew that if that story got out… she would be destroyed by that,” Winfrey recalled. “And so even though the audience was there, and the audience had cameras, I begged them not to put those pictures out because it would ruin her life, and they did not.” Winfrey added, “That would not happen today, I can tell you that.”

Houston’s appearance on the show was part of a significant comeback effort following years away from the intense glare of the public spotlight. At the time, she was promoting “I Look to You,” her first studio album in seven years. The fall reportedly happened as she performed “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” from the album.

Reflections on a Powerful Interview

During that interview, Houston had candidly discussed her marriage to Bobby Brown, the pressures of fame, and the complexities of living under constant public scrutiny. She also opened up about her addiction, acknowledging significant drug use throughout her career and her efforts toward recovery.

Winfrey, reflecting on the two-part special that marked Houston’s first major television interview in years, described it as “one of the most powerful interviews.”

“I Look to You” was released in August 2009 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming the final studio album released during Houston’s lifetime. Whitney Houston passed away in February 2012 at the age of 48. Her death was attributed to accidental drowning, with contributing factors including heart disease and cocaine use.
