Felon on Parole Accused of Arson in Fatal Homeless Shelter Fire
Authorities have charged a 24-year-old man, recently released from prison, with setting a devastating fire at a New York hotel that housed homeless individuals, a blaze that claimed the lives of six people and left dozens more without shelter. The suspect, identified as Tyler Russell, was apprehended Monday and faces six counts of second-degree manslaughter and one count of arson in connection with the incident at the Knights Inn in Endwell.
Devastating Blaze Engulfs Hotel
Emergency services received reports of the fire at approximately 6 a.m., with first responders arriving to find the Knights Inn in Broome County fully engulfed. Thick, black smoke billowed from the front of the structure, while flames were visible from the rear. The fire spread with alarming speed, prompting a significant response from multiple fire departments and law enforcement agencies to assist in containing the inferno.
At least six individuals perished in the fire, and two others sustained injuries requiring hospitalization. The identities of the victims have not yet been released by officials. The Endwell Fire Department expressed their profound sympathy, stating on social media, “First and foremost, our deepest thoughts and continuous prayers are with the victims and their families who were impacted by this morning’s tragic events. Please know that our entire department and community stand with you during this incredibly difficult time.”
Community Rallies to Support Displaced Residents
The American Red Cross provided assistance to those displaced by the fire, and a temporary shelter was established at Vestal United Methodist Church. The United Way of Broome County has also initiated an emergency relief fund for the victims, which has already garnered tens of thousands of dollars in donations.
An estimate from a Red Cross volunteer suggests that as many as 73 people were displaced by the devastating blaze. Officials have not yet disclosed a suspected motive for the arson, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Suspect’s Criminal History Revealed
Records indicate that Russell had previously served approximately two years in state prison for a grand larceny conviction before his release on parole in February. He was taken to the Broome County Jail on Monday, awaiting arraignment.
The Knights Inn is one of several local hotels utilized by the Broome County Department of Social Services to provide housing for individuals experiencing homelessness.
