Reflecting Pool Vandalism Delays Repairs Past July 4th Celebrations
White House Denounces ‘Targeted Sabotage’ of Iconic Reflecting Pool
The National Park Service (NPS) is planning to drain the historic reflecting pool once again for extensive repairs, a process that will extend beyond the upcoming Independence Day celebrations. The decision comes after allegations of deliberate vandalism have impacted the landmark, according to a court document released by the White House.
On June 9, U.S. Park Police responded to reports of damage to the reflecting pool. An official filing detailed the extent of the alleged sabotage, noting that caulk had been applied over the foam sealant, which was then cut with a sharp instrument. Furthermore, surface material showed signs of deliberate destruction, and approximately 70 fence post tops were found discarded in the water. The NPS intends to assess and repair any damage to the pool’s lining after the July 4th festivities conclude.
Recent Renovations and Broader Incidents
This latest incident follows a period of significant renovation on the reflecting pool, measures previously ordered. Washington, D.C. is anticipating large crowds for Independence Day, with preparations being complicated by a series of unusual events across the National Mall. These include the number “8647” being inscribed on the National Mall and a message written in blood on the Washington Monument.
The markings of “8647” have drawn particular attention. Within some circles, the number “86” is understood as a potential threat, referencing the practice of refusing service in the hospitality industry. The number “47” is widely interpreted as a reference to the current president, who would be the 47th to hold the office.
Arrests and Public Appeal
In relation to the alleged vandalism of the reflecting pool, seven individuals have been apprehended, with an additional seven receiving federal citations. A total of 18 police reports have been filed concerning the incidents. This week, authorities released footage and appealed to the public for assistance in identifying a person seen near the pool during the investigation into the damage and destruction of government property.
The White House has characterized the acts as more than mere mischief, describing them as “targeted sabotage by anti-American crackpots who despise a strong, proud, and beautiful country.” An official statement condemned the perpetrators as “crazed and deranged lunatics” who have “exposed their hatred for America with a cowardly, deliberate attack on one of our nation’s most iconic landmarks.”
