U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner is confronting a second serious allegation of sexual misconduct, emerging just a day after a separate rape accusation surfaced, all while his campaign faces a critical deadline for potential withdrawal. The latest claims, detailed in a report by The Washington Post, come from his ex-girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, who alleges that Platner removed condoms during sexual encounters without her consent, despite her explicit instructions to use them.

New Allegations Surface

Fifield, 41, told The Washington Post that Platner “would pull condoms off” during sex in a “sneaky way” without informing her. She stated that she confronted him about this practice both during and after sexual activity, emphasizing the danger given she was not on birth control. According to the report, Fifield recounted Platner’s reaction as playful, saying he would act “cute about it, like ‘Oh sneaky me.’”

These new allegations follow Fifield’s previous claims of physical misconduct during their relationship. She had previously stated that Platner sometimes left marks on her body from grabbing her forcefully and recounted an incident where he twisted her arm, pushed her into a bedroom, and held the door shut until she “calmed down.” Platner’s campaign has reportedly dismissed these latest claims as “categorically false and politically motivated.” Fifield, a former employee of The Heritage Foundation, had previously had her earlier concerns characterized by Platner’s supporters as politically motivated.

Previous Rape Accusation

The emergence of Fifield’s allegations compounds the pressure on Platner’s campaign, which was already reeling from a separate accusation of rape published by POLITICO. In that report, Jenny Racicot, 41, alleged that Platner drunkenly entered her home in 2021 and raped her, ejaculating inside her despite her repeated requests for him to stop. Racicot described the encounter as forceful, stating, “I remember him grabbing my pelvis and being really forceful of me,” and recalled a moment where she realized, “This is no longer my choice.” She stated this occurred while Platner was “almost blackout drunk” in Washington, D.C.

Platner has categorically denied Racicot’s allegations, issuing a video statement shortly after the POLITICO story was published. His campaign indicated it was evaluating its next steps in response to the accusation.

Campaign Crossroads and Political Fallout

The escalating scandal arrives at a critical juncture for Platner’s Senate bid. He is running to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins in Maine. A significant deadline looms: Platner must decide whether to withdraw from the race by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 13. If he withdraws, the state Democratic Party would have the authority to select a replacement candidate before the November general election.

The gravity of the accusations has led to a swift and significant political backlash. Following the rape allegation reported by POLITICO, several prominent political figures rescinded their endorsements of Platner. Among them were progressive Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who had been among his most vocal supporters.

Senator Warren issued a statement Monday night emphasizing the need for leaders who align with Democratic values, stating, “There can be no tolerance for sexual assault.” She added, “With so much at stake, the best path forward is for Graham Platner to step aside as the Democratic nominee and address these serious allegations outside this Senate race.”

Senator Sanders also weighed in on Tuesday, confirming he had spoken with Platner. “In light of these very serious allegations, I have recommended that he step aside,” Sanders stated.

Platner, an oyster farmer, has faced a tumultuous campaign season marked by various controversies since last year. The dual allegations of sexual impropriety now place his candidacy in serious jeopardy as the party and the public await his decision regarding the looming withdrawal deadline.

Looking Ahead

The coming days will be crucial for the Maine Democratic Party and for Graham Platner himself. The candidate must navigate these severe accusations while facing immense pressure from within his party and from the public to withdraw from the Senate race. The outcome of his decision will not only impact his political future but also the broader landscape of the upcoming senatorial election in Maine.
