Meth Stash Left in Rideshare Leads to California Man’s Arrest

A man’s alleged plan to distribute a significant quantity of methamphetamine was unexpectedly derailed when he left a backpack containing the drugs in a rideshare vehicle, according to San Francisco police. The driver of the vehicle contacted authorities on Sunday afternoon after discovering the backpack, which led to the recovery of approximately three-quarters of a pound of suspected meth with an estimated street value exceeding $30,000.

Accidental Discovery in a Rideshare

The incident began when a rideshare driver, realizing a passenger had left behind a bag, alerted the San Francisco Police Department. Officers responded and, upon inspecting the backpack, found it contained a substantial amount of suspected methamphetamine. The quantity recovered was later detailed by police as 355.7 grams.

The San Francisco Police Department stated in a news release that the suspect’s journey in the rideshare took an unforeseen turn. “A suspect’s rideshare trip took an unexpected turn after he left behind a bag containing more than 300 grams of methamphetamine,” the department reported. The estimated street value of the recovered drugs, based on typical pricing of up to $100 per gram, could surpass $30,000.

Locating the Suspect

The discovery occurred in an area near San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, a district known for its persistent challenges with open-air drug markets, homelessness, and crime. Police were able to identify the suspect as Jessie Ottman-Comb, a 41-year-old resident of Sacramento.

Authorities worked with the rideshare driver to arrange for the backpack’s return, a strategy that proved instrumental in apprehending Ottman-Comb. Police successfully located him at a local motel where he was staying. Upon arriving at the motel, officers secured the premises and conducted a search of his room.

Evidence Recovered

During the search of the motel room, law enforcement officials reported finding additional items believed to be connected to drug activity. These included two cellphones, two tablets, and various drug paraphernalia. All of these items, along with the methamphetamine found in the rideshare vehicle, were seized by the police as evidence in the ongoing investigation.

Charges and Ongoing Investigation

Following his apprehension, Jessie Ottman-Comb was booked into the San Francisco County Jail. He faces several charges, including possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and transportation or sale of methamphetamine. The San Francisco Police Department indicated that the investigation into the matter is still active and ongoing.

This incident highlights the unpredictable nature of criminal activity and how even seemingly minor oversights, like leaving an item behind in a vehicle, can lead to significant law enforcement action.
