Conor McGregor Details ‘Shocking’ Knee Injury After UFC Bout
Conor McGregor has provided an update on the specific knee injury sustained during his recent, brief return to the UFC octagon on July 11 in Las Vegas. The mixed martial artist, who suffered a technical knockout loss to Max Holloway at UFC 329, described the diagnosis as “quite shocking” after learning the full extent of the damage.
McGregor Reveals ACL and Meniscus Tear
In a post on X, McGregor shared the details: “Update: it was acl and meniscus.” He further elaborated on the nature of the injury, noting a peculiar similarity to a previous fight. “It is the same injury as the first Holloway fight, only this time the opposite leg. Quite shocking.” This refers to a prior encounter with Holloway that occurred 13 years ago, before McGregor achieved global fame in mixed martial arts.
Despite the setback, McGregor is adopting a positive outlook, viewing the timing as potentially fortunate. “I wonder was I saved from something worse here. I believe so,” he mused. “I believe I was saved. Thank you God! On we go, no sad stories. Thank you for the support and well wishes everyone, your health is your wealth.”
A Difficult Return to the Octagon
The bout itself was exceptionally short-lived. McGregor attempted a jumping roundhouse kick, but upon landing, he immediately clutched his right knee and fell to the canvas. Holloway capitalized on the situation, attempting to engage McGregor while he was down. Though McGregor managed to evade some strikes, it was evident he was severely compromised. Referee Mike Beltran quickly halted the contest just moments into the first round, awarding Holloway the victory and concluding the UFC 329 co-main event anticlimactically.
Following the match, McGregor expressed his distress. “My head gasket is gone. Destroyed,” he stated on X at the time. “I had no injury/injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.”
Footage shared by McGregor’s camp from the locker room before the fight showed the fighter practicing his signature jumping roundhouse kicks, which appeared to land without issue. This underscored the unexpected nature of the injury during the actual bout.
Optimism for Recovery and Future Fights
McGregor, whose professional UFC record now stands at 22-7 following the TKO loss, remains determined to recover and return to competition. He expressed confidence in his ability to make a comeback, citing advancements in medicine and training. “With today’s regenerative medicine advancements and improved training methods it is well within my realm to return by next summer,” McGregor stated. He highlighted his current mobility, noting, “I am walking without a crutch. I done leg extension machine work the other day to no issue. So I can walk without aid, and activate my quad under resistance. All very positive. I am maximum discipline and have maintained it fully since the bout.”
The fighter’s resolve suggests he is unwilling to let this injury be the final chapter of his fighting career, indicating a strong desire to compete again.
The Infamous Kick
The sequence leading to the injury involved a dynamic, albeit ill-fated, jumping roundhouse kick. As McGregor landed awkwardly, the immediate reaction was a clear indication of significant knee trauma. This particular move drew commentary from figures like Joe Rogan, who questioned the tactical decision behind such a high-risk maneuver, especially in the context of the fight’s progression.
Looking Ahead: Recovery and Resilience
The road to recovery for McGregor will involve rigorous rehabilitation. However, his history of overcoming adversity and his current optimistic prognosis suggest a strong possibility of his return to the sport. The fighter’s commitment to discipline throughout his recovery process is a key factor he emphasizes. He aims to leverage modern medical treatments and advanced training techniques to facilitate a successful comeback, targeting a return within the next year. McGregor’s message to his supporters conveyed gratitude and a focus on maintaining a positive mindset, framing his current challenge as a temporary obstacle on his path.
