RFK Jr. Challenges CNN’s COVID-19 Coverage, Citing Media’s Role in Public Fear

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently confronted CNN’s Dana Bash, asserting that the network, along with other legacy media outlets, played a significant role in amplifying public fear during the COVID-19 pandemic. The exchange occurred on Bash’s program, where Kennedy Jr. argued that the media failed in its journalistic duty by uncritically promoting the narratives of public health officials, particularly Dr. Anthony Fauci, whose private communications have recently come under scrutiny.

Fauci’s Communications Reveal Internal Doubts

The release of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s diary entries and emails, facilitated by Senator Rand Paul, has provided a glimpse into the former public health director’s private thoughts during the pandemic. These documents suggest a more complex reality than what was presented to the public. Fauci’s writings reportedly detail his awareness of the possibility, and even likelihood, of the lab leak theory concerning COVID-19’s origin, a notion initially downplayed by many officials. Furthermore, he is said to have privately acknowledged that mask mandates were implemented partly because people were already wearing masks, and the CDC was pressured to adopt the policy.

The private records also indicate Fauci’s understanding that lockdowns were not proving effective, as case numbers fluctuated irrespective of these stringent measures. Despite these private reservations, public health messaging, often amplified by major news organizations, maintained a consistent stance on the necessity and efficacy of these policies. The documents also reportedly show Fauci expressing concern about contracting COVID-19 at an event requiring vaccination proof, even as he later advocated for broader vaccine mandates and passports.

Media Friendships and Coverage Questions

Fauci’s communications also shed light on his interactions with prominent media figures. Emails and diary entries mention interactions with CNN’s Jake Tapper, including shared dinners. One such dinner occurred in October 2020, shortly before Fauci recommended widespread Thanksgiving lockdowns. When approached for comment regarding whether these personal relationships might have influenced his coverage, Tapper’s representative declined to respond.

Another CNN journalist, Dana Bash, is also mentioned in Fauci’s private writings. According to the documents, Bash had texted Fauci, expressing that he was a “better man” than Representative Jim Jordan following a contentious exchange. She also reportedly relayed that CNN colleague Wolf Blitzer felt Fauci would have been justified in telling Jordan to “go f— yourself” in response to his questioning. Bash has largely not addressed these revelations in her public role.

RFK Jr.’s Accusations Against CNN’s Pandemic Reporting

During his appearance on Bash’s show, Kennedy Jr. directly challenged the media’s role during the pandemic. He argued that figures like President Trump, who he claimed wanted to end lockdowns sooner, were unfairly criticized by the media for deviating from the public health establishment’s recommendations. Kennedy Jr. posited that had Trump ignored Fauci and other health officials, he would have faced intense media backlash, particularly from outlets like CNN.

“The thing that did the most damage to our country was the lockdowns, the lockdown that shut down 3.5 million businesses in our country with no due process, no just compensation,” Kennedy Jr. stated during the interview. “All of our churches closed, our schools, and our children are still paying the price for that. And yet we had the worst outcome of any country in the world… We have the highest death rate from COVID of any nation on earth.” While acknowledging that some statistics might be imprecise, Kennedy Jr. maintained that the core point about the detrimental impact of lockdowns was valid.

Kennedy Jr. further contended that the government’s response during COVID-19 constituted an unacceptable overreach of authority and a violation of constitutional rights, including the First Amendment’s protection against censorship. Bash, responding to his points about rights, stated, “Forgive me, but you’re just you’re talking about rights, and I’m asking about a potential public health crisis.”

The interview intensified when Kennedy Jr. accused the media of silencing or demonizing doctors who offered dissenting views from Fauci’s positions. Bash’s attempt to move past the topic was met with Kennedy Jr.’s retort, “Of course you want to move on, ’cause you were part of the problem!” He elaborated, stating, “There was absolute press malpractice… You weren’t doing your job, and your job is a fierce skepticism toward authority. You weren’t doing that. You were beating up on people who were dissenting.”

Accusations of Fear-Mongering and Lack of Skepticism

Kennedy Jr. directly accused CNN of intentionally “scaring people” during the pandemic. When Bash questioned his assertion, he replied, “Because that was the job of CNN!” He criticized the network for consistently featuring what he described as “malicious, misinformed ‘experts'” and for promoting policies that he believes were harmful, citing examples like demands for unvaccinated individuals to be confined to their homes long after the vaccines’ effectiveness against transmission became questionable.

He concluded his argument by asserting that Fauci, presented as the ultimate authority, was misleading the public on critical issues like masks, social distancing, natural immunity, vaccine transmission, and the virus’s origins. Kennedy Jr. argued that the media, including CNN, punished individuals for questioning these “experts” while simultaneously relying on them for information, despite evidence suggesting these experts were providing inaccurate guidance.

Kennedy Jr. suggested that media outlets like CNN and figures like Bash and Tapper unquestioningly accepted Fauci’s pronouncements due to shared political viewpoints, rather than through rigorous journalistic inquiry. He contended that they overlooked qualified dissenting voices, such as Dr. Jay Bhattacharya or Dr. Scott Atlas, because of political disagreements, prioritizing ideological alignment over factual accuracy.

CNN’s Response

In response to the interview, CNN issued a statement defending Dana Bash’s performance. “Asking tough, substantive questions to those in power is the job of every journalist, and Dana did hers incredibly well today. We stand behind Dana, her reporting, and CNN’s overall coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the statement read. This response was characterized by some as lacking self-awareness, given Kennedy Jr.’s claims that the very questions he raised were precisely the ones the media failed to ask Dr. Fauci.
