Cartel Boss Linked to Influencer Murder Arrested
Mexican authorities have apprehended Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, also known as “El R-1,” a figure identified as the alleged leader of a violent criminal faction. The arrest, a result of a coordinated military and law enforcement operation, is connected to the assassination of a local mayor and has reportedly uncovered new evidence linking his organization to the shocking livestreamed murder of a young beauty influencer.
Alleged Cartel Leader in Custody
Officials have identified Álvarez Ayala as the head of “Los Rs,” a criminal group reportedly affiliated with the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). His apprehension marks a significant development in ongoing investigations into organized crime in the Michoacán and Jalisco regions of Mexico.
According to statements from Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch, “El R-1” is considered the primary leader of Los Rs, a cell notorious for its involvement in extortion, murder, and drug trafficking. The group is said to operate extensively in areas including Apatzingán, Uruapan, and Morelia in Michoacán, as well as in the state of Jalisco. Harfuch noted that the organization has had a detrimental impact on local producers, business owners, and ordinary families.
Links to Mayor’s Assassination
Authorities allege that Álvarez Ayala orchestrated and financed the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo. The mayor was reportedly killed during the Day of the Dead celebrations in November 2025. Manzo had been a vocal opponent of organized crime and had actively worked to combat corruption within the local police force. His killing has led to the arrest of 31 individuals, as stated by García Harfuch.
Connection to Influencer’s Murder
The investigation has also drawn a disturbing connection between Álvarez Ayala’s organization and the May 2025 murder of Valeria Márquez, a 23-year-old beauty influencer. Márquez, who had a significant following on TikTok, was fatally shot while broadcasting live from her beauty salon in Zapopan, Jalisco. Reports indicate that Márquez was in a past relationship with Francisco, the son of Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala.
Security Secretary García Harfuch detailed the alleged link, stating that Francisco had reportedly threatened Márquez multiple times after their relationship ended. “This criminal cell allegedly participated under his orders in coordinating multiple violent acts in the region,” García Harfuch explained. “Among them is the tragic feminicide of Valeria Márquez, which occurred in May 2025 in Zapopan, Jalisco, a crime linked to Francisco, the victim’s former partner and Ramón Ángel’s son.”
Further details emerged suggesting a direct request from Francisco to his father. “With yesterday’s arrest, we learned that R-1’s son had a romantic relationship with Valeria. He had threatened her on several occasions and everything indicates, and this will be proven, that the son asked his father, R-1, to carry out the feminicide,” García Harfuch was quoted as saying.
The Livestreamed Killing
The murder of Valeria Márquez gained widespread attention due to its graphic nature and the fact that it was livestreamed. Video footage from the incident appeared to show an individual entering Márquez’s salon, inquiring if she was Valeria, and then presenting her with a gift. The situation escalated rapidly as the individual allegedly shot her in the chest and head. The video showed Márquez collapsing before another individual terminated the livestream.
At the time of her death, the killing was being investigated as a femicide, a crime specifically defined under Mexican law to address gender-based violence. Márquez was a popular content creator with over 100,000 followers on TikTok.
Ongoing Investigations and Sanctions
While Álvarez Ayala is now in custody and being held at the Altiplano maximum-security prison, his son Francisco remains at large. Jalisco authorities have also apprehended another individual suspected of involvement in Márquez’s murder. Investigations into both the assassination of Mayor Manzo and the killing of Valeria Márquez are continuing.
The CJNG has been a focus of international efforts to combat drug trafficking. The U.S. Treasury Department has previously designated the cartel as one of the world’s most powerful criminal organizations, imposing sanctions on numerous individuals and entities associated with it in July.
