Michael Bouchard, a U.S. Army veteran and Bronze Star recipient, has secured the Republican nomination in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, advancing his bid to represent the competitive seat. His victory on Tuesday evening came with a significant boost: an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. Republicans are banking on Bouchard’s military background and his platform focused on steering the country in a new direction to capture the district, a key battleground in the GOP’s effort to maintain its narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. A Competitive District’s Political Landscape
Michigan’s 10th Congressional District has proven to be a closely contested area. In the 2024 election cycle, the incumbent Republican, John James, narrowly defeated his Democratic challenger, Carl Marlinga, a judge and former prosecutor, with 51.1% of the vote compared to Marlinga’s 45.0%. The previous election in 2022 saw an even tighter race, with James winning by a slim margin of 48.8% to Marlinga’s 48.3%.
James, who had the advantage of incumbency, recently announced he would not seek reelection to the House. Instead, he is launching a gubernatorial campaign, stating his intention to safeguard Michigan’s future prosperity. “My family, like countless others, came to our great state for the better opportunities our manufacturing and automotive industries offered and to live the American dream,” James shared in a public statement.
Bouchard’s Military Service and Campaign Platform
Bouchard is emphasizing his extensive military career, having served with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. His deployments included service in Iraq and along the U.S. southern border. Similar to Representative James, Bouchard also earned a Bronze Star for his distinguished service as part of the joint task force combating ISIS.
As a political newcomer, Bouchard is positioning himself as a proponent of a national shift away from the policies of the previous administration. He has been vocal about his views on border security, drawing a stark contrast with the current administration’s approach. “Under President Trump, I led missions on the southern border; back then we got the job done. But on day one, Joe Biden shut us all down; he opened the border,” Bouchard stated in a campaign video. He further elaborated, “Human trafficking, drug smuggling, known terrorists walked right in. The Army taught me that weak leadership has consequences and I’m ready to lead America back.”
On his official website, Bouchard outlines key policy priorities. These include revitalizing American manufacturing, completing the construction of the border wall, and increasing parental involvement in educational systems. His campaign narrative frequently highlights his military experience as a foundation for his leadership aspirations.
Key Endorsements Bolster Bouchard’s Candidacy
The endorsement from former President Donald Trump, shared via Truth Social earlier this year, provided a significant boost to Bouchard’s campaign. Trump described Bouchard as “A third-generation Michigander, brave U.S. Army veteran and Bronze Star recipient Mike has served his state and nation with distinction and will bring that same fighting spirit to the U.S. Congress.” He concluded, “Mike Bouchard has my complete and total endorsement to be the next representative from Michigan’s 10th congressional district.”
Beyond the former President, Bouchard has garnered support from several prominent Republican figures in Congress. These include endorsements from U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana, Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota, and GOP Conference Chair Lisa McClain of Michigan. This broad support from within the party leadership underscores the Republican establishment’s backing for Bouchard’s candidacy.

Having successfully navigated the Republican primary, Michael Bouchard now faces the general election on November 3rd.
