Michigan GOP Candidate: Socialist Wave Won’t Sway State Voters

WARREN, MI – A rising Republican star in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, Mike Bouchard Jr., asserts that the recent narrow victory of progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in the state’s Senate primary is not indicative of a broader embrace of socialism by Michigan voters. Bouchard, a decorated military veteran, believes El-Sayed’s message is actually driving a wedge through the nation.

Challenging El-Sayed’s Message

Bouchard, who served as an infantry and intelligence officer in elite Army divisions and is a Bronze Star recipient, directly addressed El-Sayed’s campaign activities leading up to the primary. He pointed to El-Sayed’s association with streamer Hasan Piker, who had previously made controversial remarks about the 9/11 attacks. “El-Sayed was campaigning with Hasan Piker the day before the election, Hasan Piker said that America deserved 9/11, we did not deserve 9/11, tell that to the thousands of people who died in 9/11 and the thousands of American military who died abroad defending this country,” Bouchard stated. He argued that such rhetoric, appearing on American streets, is actively “ripping America apart block by block” and called for national unity and practical solutions over partisan division and the introduction of socialist ideologies.

El-Sayed secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Michigan by a slim margin, winning by less than one percent against establishment-backed incumbent Rep. Haley Stevens. Bouchard characterized this win as a sign of division within the Democratic Party, suggesting that while the progressive wing may be the most vocal, it does not represent the sentiment of the majority of Michigan’s electorate.

Michigan Voters: Moderates Seeking Results

“Absolutely not,” Bouchard responded when asked if he believed Michigan voters were leaning towards far-left politics. He described the people of Michigan as hardworking individuals dedicated to their families, characterizing them as moderates who carefully consider both Democratic and Republican platforms. “They don’t want partisan politics. They want someone who’s going to deliver results for them. And that’s why I got in this race is to deliver real, meaningful results,” he added. Bouchard, the son of longtime Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, is positioning himself against what he perceives as a growing socialist trend, citing El-Sayed and Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong as examples of this movement gaining traction.

Lessons from History and Global Experience

Drawing on his global military experience, Bouchard invoked historical parallels to underscore his opposition to socialism. “When the Berlin wall came down, which way did the people run? Did they run towards a communist Soviet union, or did they run towards freedom in America? Socialism doesn’t work. It’s been proven time and time again. I’ve fought all across the world and I’ve seen what socialism does to a country. We cannot allow that to come here,” he asserted. While acknowledging his own platform is centered on change, Bouchard insisted that socialism is not the solution. He specifically criticized El-Sayed’s stance on defunding the police and expressed concern about El-Sayed’s perceived alignment with figures aiming to undermine the country, contrasting it with his own goal of national rebuilding.

Focus on Crime and Local Issues

Bouchard is set to face Democrat Christina Hines, a former county prosecutor, in the general election for the seat currently held by Rep. John James, who is running for governor. Bouchard indicated that the contrast between his and Hines’s positions on crime will be a central theme of his campaign. He has criticized Hines, stating she supports “soft on crime policies and a woke agenda that I just don’t align with.”

Elaborating on his perspective on the justice system, Bouchard stated, “You look across a lot of the prosecutors across the country, some enforce the rules on the books, some don’t, some blame victims, and some are really kind to the offenders. I stand for protecting victims and making sure that the offenders go to prison.” He noted that his opponent has been praised for compassion towards offenders, while he prioritizes victims and public safety. “People in this district want to be safe and if you’re not safe, you can’t do anything else. You can’t leave your house. So from the southern border to crime across the district, I’m gonna stand up for the people of this district,” Bouchard declared.

Hines Responds

Christina Hines responded to Bouchard’s criticisms by highlighting her own background as a prosecutor compared to his military service. “Mike Bouchard Jr has never put a predator behind bars, and he’s never lived in Macomb a day in his life,” Hines stated. “I spent my entire career working with law enforcement to put serial rapists, child predators, murderers, and traffickers in prison. I’m running for Congress to protect the families in my community, and to fight against the corruption that’s rampant in DC.”
