Hawaii GOP Taps Contractor for Governor’s Race
Gary Cordery, a local contractor, has secured the Republican nomination for Hawaii governor, setting the stage for a challenging contest against incumbent Democrat Josh Green in November. Cordery defeated fellow businessman Ken Fujiyama in Saturday’s primary, earning the chance to break a two-decade Democratic hold on the state’s highest office. However, the path forward appears steep, with national political analysts rating the race as solidly Democratic. Hawaii has not elected a Republican governor since Linda Lingle concluded her term in 2010.
A Steep Climb Ahead
The incumbent, Governor Josh Green, enjoys a healthy 56% approval rating, further complicating Cordery’s bid. Adding to the challenge is a significant financial disparity. Governor Green’s campaign has amassed approximately $3.5 million, a stark contrast to Cordery’s reported fundraising of around $313,000. This financial disadvantage looms large in a state where the cost of living is already a major concern for residents.
Cordery’s Platform: Addressing Cost of Living and Corruption
Despite the uphill battle, Cordery is campaigning on a platform aimed at tackling Hawaii’s persistent issues, particularly the high cost of living. He also emphasizes the need for education reform and a robust crackdown on corruption, issues he believes have plagued the islands for too long.
In an interview, Cordery expressed his deep affection for Hawaii, stating, “As a husband, father and grandfather, businessman and community servant, I love Hawai’i.” He elaborated on his motivations, noting, “These islands of unique beauty have endured mismanagement for decades. Her people live under tremendous stress and anxiety. I am running to open opportunity, create abundance and ensure stewardship of her resources, bringing accountability and hope for the people.”
Housing Initiatives
A cornerstone of Cordery’s economic plan involves addressing the critical shortage of affordable housing. He proposes the development of 15,000 new homes specifically for working families, with price points estimated between $400,000 and $600,000. To facilitate this, Cordery suggests utilizing state-owned land for fee-simple housing projects, streamlining the permitting process, and opening additional land for residential development.
Tax Relief and Fiscal Management
Cordery is also advocating for significant tax reforms designed to ease the financial burden on residents. His proposals include eliminating the state’s General Excise Tax on essential items like food and medicine. Furthermore, he aims to freeze property taxes for retirees, providing much-needed stability for seniors on fixed incomes.
He has been vocal about his concerns regarding the state’s fiscal management, arguing that taxpayer dollars are not being used effectively. Cordery pledges to implement rigorous audits to identify and eliminate waste within the state’s substantial budget. “Hawai’i’s 20.5 billion dollar budget for 1.4 mil[lion] people is a staggering number,” Cordery remarked. “New Hampshire has 1.4 million people but a $7.75 billion dollar budget. I believe our tax burden is out of control. The answer is management.”
The Challenge of a Deep Blue State
The upcoming gubernatorial election in Hawaii presents a formidable challenge for any Republican candidate. The state has consistently leaned Democratic for over two decades, making a party flip a rare occurrence. Governor Green’s incumbent advantage, coupled with the Democratic Party’s established presence, means Cordery faces an uphill battle to convince voters to embrace a change in leadership. The race will undoubtedly test the effectiveness of Cordery’s message against the backdrop of Hawaii’s political landscape and the incumbent’s strong standing.
