AOC Shares Personal Egg-Freezing Journey, Criticizes Reproductive Policy

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has publicly shared her decision to undergo egg freezing, detailing the personal journey in a series of Instagram Story videos. The congresswoman framed the procedure as a means to gain greater control over her future and used the announcement to voice criticism of policies impacting women’s reproductive health, particularly those enacted during the Trump administration.

Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent member of the progressive “Squad,” posted the videos on a Saturday, explaining that the decision to pursue fertility preservation was years in the making and involved significant personal saving. She expressed a desire for openness about the process, noting that many women lack adequate education regarding their reproductive health and family-planning options.

A Personal Decision with Broader Implications

“I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs,” Ocasio-Cortez stated. “I was weighing it for a very long time, and I think that I was saving for it for a very long time.”

Elected to Congress at the relatively young age of 28, Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the unique challenges of navigating significant life decisions under public scrutiny. “When you get elected young, you have to grow up in the public eye in a time that most people usually get to grow more privately,” she remarked.

The New York Democrat conveyed her hope that by sharing her experience, conversations around fertility, pregnancy, menopause, perimenopause, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and other facets of women’s health—topics she believes are frequently marginalized—could become more normalized. “As women in general, we are not taught about our bodies,” Ocasio-Cortez observed, encompassing everything from puberty to various reproductive health conditions.

She added, “I think we need to show more depictions of women having full lives in every context and every choice.”

Empowerment and Political Context

Ocasio-Cortez characterized the decision to freeze her eggs as an act of reclaiming personal agency. “This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life,” she asserted. “If people want to make assumptions about my decision, let them make those assumptions. I feel empowered to make this choice.”

Acknowledging the privilege associated with accessing such medical procedures, she noted that technological advancements have made egg freezing more financially attainable. However, Ocasio-Cortez then shifted to the political landscape, recognizing that personal disclosures can carry a “political tax.” She pointed out that female politicians often face a level of scrutiny regarding marriage, pregnancy, and family planning that their male counterparts typically do not.

Furthermore, she attributed the current environment, which she described as increasingly challenging for women’s reproductive autonomy, to the policies of the Trump administration. “In the political context that we’re in, in an administration that is dedicated to politicizing women’s bodies and taking our choices away from us and punishing us around decisions to be pregnant or not be pregnant,” she stated, “Frankly, this administration has made pregnancy more dangerous than probably at any point in the last 30-plus years.” Ocasio-Cortez concluded this point by emphasizing the need for collective action: “We’re going to take our power back. And we have to talk about it.”

The congresswoman’s announcement prompted varied reactions online. Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, suggested that Ocasio-Cortez’s decision reflected a progressive emphasis on careers over family formation, linking it to declining fertility rates. He commented on social media, “This is the message progressives spread when it comes to family formation, and one of the reasons why fertility rates are cratering. Just freeze your eggs, kids! Pursue that career, even if you’ve been engaged for 4 years to a man you’ve known since college.” Kolvet also made a remark about Ocasio-Cortez’s age, noting she would be 37 soon and that a pregnancy at that point would be considered high-risk.

Ocasio-Cortez has been engaged to her longtime partner, Riley Roberts, since May 2022. Her announcement comes several years after her widely reported 2019 statement about the urgency of addressing climate change.

The congresswoman indicated her intention to share more about the egg-freezing process, including the hormone injections necessary before egg retrieval. She mentioned having already documented unboxing her medications and administering her initial injection. Ocasio-Cortez even shared a plan to administer an injection in a green room prior to a television appearance, stating, “I’m gonna take my shot in the green room before my interview. Because women can do anything.” She further elaborated on the multifaceted nature of her life, saying, “I think it’s bad— that I’m gonna be, you know, giving myself shots in the green room, get my glam on, roll out, talk about international events, domestic policy, elections, pop out, live my life, do my thing.”
