A man has been arrested and charged with multiple hate crimes following a disruptive incident at Central Synagogue in Manhattan during Friday night’s Shabbat services. Authorities reported that the suspect allegedly assaulted a congregant and a member of the synagogue’s security team.

Suspect Identified and Charges Filed

The New York City Police Department identified the individual as Larry Montes, 46, a resident of the Bronx. He faces charges including two counts of assault as a hate crime and one count of criminal mischief as a hate crime, among other offenses. The incident occurred at the Lexington Avenue synagogue, a well-known landmark in the city.

According to statements from NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the disruption began as Montes was being escorted from the premises. “As synagogue security was escorting him out, he struck a member of the congregation, damaged synagogue property, and then spit at and headbutted a member of the security team,” Tisch stated. An NYPD sergeant, who was present at the synagogue on a paid detail, intervened and took Montes into custody without further incident.

No Serious Injuries Reported

Commissioner Tisch expressed relief that no one sustained serious injuries during the altercation. “I have spoken with the rabbi of the synagogue, and I’m relieved that no one was seriously injured,” she said. “Those who were hurt were evaluated at the scene and are doing well.” The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and officials have stated there are no known additional threats at this time. In response to the event, additional NYPD resources have been deployed to provide increased security at the synagogue.

City Officials Condemn the Attack

New York City Mayor Eric Adams also condemned the attack, emphasizing the city’s commitment to religious freedom and safety. “I am horrified by the assault at Central Synagogue during services today,” Mayor Adams said. “I can only imagine the pain and fear an attack like this, during Shabbat services, causes for the congregation and for Jewish New Yorkers across our city.” He added, “Every New Yorker must be able to observe their religion without fear of violence. This despicable act has no place in our city, and our administration will do everything in our power to keep Jewish New Yorkers safe.”

A Personal Connection for the Police Commissioner

For Commissioner Tisch, the incident at Central Synagogue carried a personal weight. She revealed that she grew up attending services at the synagogue and has a deep connection to the space. “I understand the sanctity of this space and its meaning for congregants,” Tisch shared. “Central Synagogue is where I grew up. In joy and in sorrow, it has always been a place of comfort and peace. What happened there tonight is deeply painful. A place of worship should never be a crime scene.” Her personal history with the synagogue underscored the emotional impact of the event on the community and law enforcement leadership.

Context of Rising Antisemitic Incidents

This incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened concerns regarding antisemitic acts and hate crimes targeting Jewish communities nationwide. While the investigation is ongoing, the nature of the charges reflects the authorities’ assessment of the suspect’s motives. The NYPD remains vigilant in monitoring and responding to potential threats against religious institutions across the city, deploying resources to ensure the safety and security of all New Yorkers observing their faiths.

Community Response and Ongoing Investigation

Leaders within the Jewish community have expressed solidarity with Central Synagogue and reiterated calls for vigilance against hate. The investigation will likely focus on gathering further evidence to support the hate crime charges, which carry enhanced penalties under state law. The NYPD has committed to a thorough review of security protocols and community outreach to prevent future occurrences. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by religious communities in maintaining safe spaces for worship and community gathering.
