Alaska voters have narrowed the field of contenders for governor, with former state Representative Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins and his running mate Zac Johnson securing the top spot in Tuesday’s primary. They will advance to the general election in November, alongside three other pairs of candidates vying to succeed outgoing Republican Governor Michael Dunleavy, who is term-limited.

Ranked-Choice Voting Shapes the Race

The unique ranked-choice voting system employed in Alaska’s general elections played a significant role in determining which candidates moved forward. This system allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. If no candidate secures a majority of first-choice votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed based on the next preference indicated by those voters. This process continues until one candidate achieves a majority.

While Tuesday’s primary determined the nominees, the general election will see these pairings face off under the ranked-choice system. Experts have noted that this method can sometimes create complexities for voters, occasionally referred to as ‘traps,’ where strategic ranking becomes crucial.

Key Contenders Emerge

Among the seventeen governor-lieutenant governor pairings that competed, the race for the top positions was closely watched. Former Democratic State Senator Tom Begich, a prominent figure with deep political roots in Alaska, and his running mate Julia Hnilicka, had been considered a frontrunner heading into the primary. The Begich family has been a fixture in Alaskan politics since the state’s early days.

Tom Begich’s lineage includes his father, former U.S. Representative Nick Begich Sr., who served in both state and federal capacities. His career was tragically cut short in a plane crash alongside House Majority Leader Hale Boggs. Tom’s brother, Mark Begich, also served as a U.S. Senator for Alaska. While most family members are Democrats, the incumbent U.S. Representative Nick Begich III is a Republican.

On the Republican side, business owner Bernadette Wilson, who hails from the Kenai Peninsula and boasts a long family history in Alaska, emerged as a leading candidate with running mate Michael Shower. Lieutenant Governor Nancy Dahlstrom, Governor Dunleavy’s second-in-command, had also been a contender but withdrew from the race in June.

Another notable Republican candidate is Michael Loren Gilbert, who has expressed ambitions to bolster the state’s energy sector and explore the possibility of a highway connecting Alaska to the contiguous United States. His running mate, Timothy Hickel, comes from another influential Alaskan political dynasty. His father, Wally Hickel, served two non-consecutive terms as governor and held the position of Secretary of the Interior under President Richard Nixon. The Walter J. Hickel Parkway in Anchorage bears his name.

Former Anchorage Mayor David Bronson, also a Republican, was another significant candidate on the ballot, running with Josh Church. Additionally, former State Senator Click Bishop and his lieutenant governor candidate Greta Schuerch were among those seeking advancement.

Political Landscape and Future Outlook

With Governor Dunleavy stepping down due to term limits, the upcoming general election presents a potential opportunity for Democrats to regain the governor’s mansion in a state generally considered Republican. Tom Begich’s campaign aims to capitalize on this opening.

The political landscape in Alaska has seen shifts in recent election cycles. Notably, U.S. Representative Nick Begich III unseated then-Representative Mary Peltola in a previous election. Peltola had initially won the seat following the passing of long-serving Republican Congressman Don Young, who represented Alaska for nearly five decades.

The primary results set the stage for a competitive general election, where the intricacies of ranked-choice voting will undoubtedly play a crucial role in determining Alaska’s next governor.
