A harrowing search is underway for an American man, Jitendra Patel, who went missing amid a devastating flood and mudslide disaster in the Himalayas. His son, Sunny Patel, realized his father might have been caught in the catastrophe after watching widely shared footage of the torrent that swept through the border region between Nepal and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.

A Son’s Growing Dread

Sunny Patel recounted the chilling moment he saw the viral video. “I watched the video and I just thought of how horrific it was. And then… probably 30 seconds later, it registered,” he said. The realization struck him with sickening speed. He immediately texted his mother, who had initially hoped they hadn’t seen the footage. “But of course, it was so viral by then… My mom responded and said, ‘That’s exactly where he was,’ actually.”

The last confirmed contact Sunny had with his father was on Wednesday morning, local time. At that point, Jitendra Patel was believed to have already crossed from Nepal into China. However, confirming any details has proven incredibly difficult, with the lack of information emerging from China being a significant source of frustration for the family.

Frantic Efforts to Find Answers

The Patel family has been working tirelessly to locate Jitendra, reaching out to embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing, as well as the U.S. State Department. They have filed missing person reports with numerous agencies, noting that some have been responsive, while others have offered little assistance. Sunny has also appealed for broader awareness, stating, “We’re trying to go on these media segments and get the awareness out there that there are people on the Chinese side that we aren’t getting a ton of information about.”

The Science Behind the Catastrophe

Experts are pointing to a massive glacial ice collapse as the likely cause of the catastrophic mudslides and flash floods that devastated parts of Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday. The theory suggests that a large chunk of ice broke off a glacier, plunging into the Lhende Khola River. This impact is believed to have triggered immense waves of rock, ice, and debris that surged through the mountain river systems, causing widespread destruction.

The human toll has been immense. Newly released figures indicate that over 600 people have lost their lives in the disaster, with more than 3,000 individuals still unaccounted for. Fortunately, over 4,000 people have been successfully rescued from the affected areas.

A Spiritual Journey Interrupted

Jitendra Patel was on a spiritual pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, a sacred site that draws thousands of pilgrims annually. According to Sunny, his father’s group was actually scheduled to arrive at their destination the day before the disaster struck. “They were actually supposed to be there the day prior and unfortunately had some car troubles from what we can make out… which, you know, of course, could be all the difference,” Sunny explained, highlighting the cruel twist of fate.

Sunny described his father as a man of deep faith and unwavering optimism. “He believed in the goodness of everybody, probably to a fault,” he shared, adding that Jitendra “lived with kindness in his heart.” His father’s positive outlook was a defining characteristic. Sunny recalled, “He always, always, always said, ‘God is good…’ If you called him and said, ‘How you doing?’ He would say, ‘I’m the best, God is great.’ And he was just the most upbeat, positive person I’ve ever met.”

Ongoing Challenges and Monitoring

Search and rescue operations faced temporary setbacks on Saturday due to adverse weather conditions, including rain and heavy fog. Authorities are also closely monitoring the situation concerning two newly formed glacial lakes upstream from the disaster zone. One of these lakes has shown signs of overflowing at times, presenting a continued risk to the region.

The family’s hope remains that increased awareness will lead to more information and potentially aid in the search for Jitendra Patel and others missing on the Chinese side of the border.
