Canadian powerlifting champion April Hutchinson spearheaded the seventh rally supporting basketball player Sophie Cunningham on Tuesday evening in Toronto. This event marked a significant milestone as the first such gathering to occur outside the United States.

A group of Cunningham’s supporters congregated near Scotiabank Arena before the Indiana Fever’s game against the Toronto Tempo. Many attendees were seen sporting T-shirts from XX-XY Athletics. According to Hutchinson, the assembly was initially composed solely of Cunningham supporters. However, a brief verbal exchange occurred when a small group of about five individuals, wearing pro-transgender messaging on their shirts, approached and commented that the rally signs were disrespectful.

Hutchinson expressed gratitude for the assistance of the Toronto police, noting their proactive engagement. “The Toronto police contacted me this morning and wanted details about the rally to ensure our safety,” Hutchinson stated, emphasizing the department’s commitment to maintaining order and participant security.

Billboard Sparks Controversy and Tickets Issued

A notable point of contention arose when a large mobile billboard, sponsored by the news outlet Rebel News, became the focus of a disagreement between rally participants and local law enforcement. The billboard featured images of Cunningham alongside messages from prominent athletes and public figures, including Martina Navratilova, addressing the topic of fairness in women’s sports.

The presence and operation of the billboard prompted police to issue tickets. Rebel News has indicated to reporters that they are consulting legal counsel to contest the charges. Documentation of the ticket obtained reveals the violation cited was for “Display sign with animation/video display/illumination/flashing lights/sound/movement or simulation motion, contrary to Toronto Municipal By-law 693-14, Section 12.”

When approached for comment, the Toronto Police Department stated, “Since this charge is now before the courts, we won’t be able to provide any further information.”

Cunningham’s Performance and Fan Reaction

Inside the arena, Sophie Cunningham had a strong performance on the court. She successfully made all three of her three-point attempts, contributing to a total of 13 points for the game. Despite her athletic contributions, Cunningham faced boos from a portion of the crowd. Her status as a polarizing figure has grown since she publicly voiced her support for policies aimed at protecting women’s sports from the inclusion of biological males.

Following the game, Cunningham addressed the crowd’s reaction. “I want to shout out the Tempo crowd, and the city, I think we had so much fun, it’s my first time being in Canada… but the crowd was absolutely amazing, and I think that’s what sports is all about, you’re going to get boos you’re going to get cheers, but just the fact that they’re so passionate, they’re loud and they’re putting out for the city, I think it’s amazing,” Cunningham told reporters, highlighting the passion of the Toronto fans.

Future Rallies Planned

The movement supporting Sophie Cunningham is set to continue, with plans for similar rallies to follow the Indiana Fever to their upcoming games. Two more “Sophie Nights” are scheduled. The first will take place outside Indiana’s next game in Dallas against the Wings, and another is planned for New York on Saturday, prior to a matchup against the Liberty.
