A promising young police officer from Arkansas tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue his fiancée from a powerful river current, just hours after he had asked her to marry him. Officer Fred Marsh, 24, of the Rogers Police Department, drowned in Missouri’s Elk River on Saturday after entering the water to save a struggling swimmer, later identified by her mother as Marsh’s fiancée, Hailey. The incident occurred near Noel, Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Marsh entered the Elk River to assist another swimmer who was in distress. While he and a fellow officer managed to bring Hailey to safety, Marsh himself became overwhelmed by the river’s force. He reportedly struggled with exhaustion, submerged, and did not resurface. His body was recovered the following day, Sunday, and he was pronounced deceased.

Hailey’s mother, Sheryl Padgett, recounted the events with profound sadness, describing the couple’s three-year relationship as beautiful and filled with love. “Even though legally he was not my son-in-law, he will forever be my son,” Padgett stated, reflecting Marsh’s deep integration into her family. The couple had been enjoying a canoeing trip with another couple when Hailey entered the water and began to struggle against the current as she tried to return to their boat.

Padgett emphasized Marsh’s character, highlighting his loving nature, strong work ethic, and unwavering guidance by his Christian faith. She noted his innate willingness to help others without hesitation. “There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for anyone,” she said. “You didn’t have to tell him. You didn’t have to beg him. He just was willing and would jump in there and do whatever it took to help someone.” Padgett drew parallels between Marsh’s sacrifice and her own experience of loss, having lost her only son in a fatal accident four years prior. She began calling Marsh her son shortly after he started dating Hailey, forging a deep, maternal bond.

Marsh, who was in his first year with the Rogers Police Department, had graduated from the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy in April. His dedication to service was evident from the outset of his career. A motorcade on Monday escorted his body through Northwest Arkansas, drawing crowds who lined the route to pay their respects. Padgett observed that the outpouring of support from law enforcement agencies and the wider community underscored the significant impact Marsh had made in a short time.

The response, she noted, made it clear that Fred was cherished not only by his immediate family but also by his fiancée’s family and his own. “They made it very clear that Fred was not just their family, but so was my daughter, my family and, even more importantly, Fred’s family,” Padgett shared.

In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was established by Hailey’s sister to help manage her lease, bills, and other unexpected expenses. As of Thursday morning, the fundraiser had garnered nearly $2,000. A description on the page poignantly described Marsh as an “upstanding young man – Son, Fiancée, Officer, Brother, Friend, and more to all. We are devastated and will miss him dearly.”

Funeral arrangements are being managed by Marsh’s family, with expectations of attendance from fellow officers, former classmates, childhood friends, and others from across the state. Padgett urged those wishing to honor Marsh’s memory to embrace his spirit of kindness and compassion. “Let’s do something in Fred’s honor,” she suggested. “Be kind to your fellow man. When Fred loved, he loved with everything he had, and he loved well.”
