A couple’s seventh-anniversary celebration in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, took an unexpectedly wild turn when a black bear decided to explore a local tea shop, much to the surprise of its patrons and staff. Victoria Puyol and Joshua Card were enjoying their getaway when they stopped at The Spice & Tea Exchange on Friday, only to find a furry, uninvited guest making itself at home.
An Unforeseen Visitor Arrives
The unusual encounter began when Joshua Card noticed the bear near the shop’s entrance. “There’s a bear,” he casually remarked. Initially, Victoria Puyol didn’t quite grasp the situation, but as the statement was repeated by Card and the store clerk, she turned to see the animal standing in the doorway. Following standard wildlife safety advice, the couple began to back away, but the bear ventured further inside the shop.
The store clerk quickly ushered Puyol and Card behind the counter, granting them access to an emergency exit. The curious bear, seemingly unfazed by the human presence, began investigating the shop’s offerings. It was observed tearing into a sweet-tea blend and examining tea diffusers. Meanwhile, a crowd of onlookers had gathered outside, drawn by the commotion.
A Close Encounter with a Curious Bear
Despite attempts to deter the animal, including an air horn blast from an employee of a neighboring store, the bear remained undeterred. Card began filming as the bear approached the counter, even addressing the animal with a lighthearted, “Hey, what you doing there, buddy?” Puyol later recounted her reaction to Card’s casual address, noting, “It’s a bear. It’s not a puppy. It’s a bear.”
Card, a military veteran with experience in emergency situations, admitted to initial uncertainty about how to react. He considered the possibility that it might be a trained animal due to the populated area but soon realized it was a wild creature. “This didn’t really feel like an emergency,” Card stated. “It felt unpredictable to me.” He observed that the bear appeared more curious than aggressive, noting, “He didn’t really seem threatened.”
Puyol described her feelings as more shocked than frightened. “I wasn’t scared,” she said. “I was just shocked.” She elaborated, “I wasn’t like, ‘Oh my God, it’s a bear, I’m going to die.’ No, it was like, there’s a wild animal, like eight feet away from me.”
Adding a layer of irony to the situation, Puyol confessed that she had expressed a desire to see a bear during their anniversary trip. “Be careful what you wish for because I wanted to see a bear, not that up close and personal,” she quipped.
The Bear Departs, Leaving Lasting Memories
The bear’s exploration eventually came to an end without any intervention being necessary. The clerk directed the couple to another exit on the second floor, but the bear suddenly exited the shop on its own before they needed to use it. Card and the clerk secured the door and waited to ensure the area was safe before leaving.
Puyol estimated that the entire bizarre encounter lasted between 10 and 15 minutes. Store employees informed the couple that the bear might have been a frequent visitor, as it had reportedly entered the business earlier in the week. The shop itself had even posted a photo of a bear on social media with a caption humorously noting its return for more “sugar.”
For Puyol and Card, the unexpected wildlife encounter transformed their anniversary getaway into an unforgettable experience. “The trip has been filled with oddities, and so this just kind of… fuels that whole experience,” Card remarked.

While startling, bear encounters are not entirely uncommon in the Gatlinburg area, which is situated near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Wildlife officials often remind visitors to maintain a safe distance from bears and never to feed them, as this can lead to habituation and increase the risk of negative interactions.
The Spice & Tea Exchange, a popular shop known for its wide array of spices, teas, and related gifts, is a frequent stop for tourists.
