Charges Filed Following Sunday Shooting
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has charged Elijah Bieniemy with malicious wounding, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. His public defender has filed a motion arguing that Elijah appears to have significant mental health issues and is currently unable to assist in his own defense. This filing has led to the delay in his court proceedings, pending the results of the competency evaluation.
Mental Health Evaluation Ordered
A judge has reportedly granted the request for a mental health competency evaluation. While a separate motion for a mental health evaluation was temporarily withdrawn, the primary competency assessment is moving forward. Elijah Bieniemy’s preliminary hearing has been rescheduled for September 9th. This date falls just days before the Chiefs are slated to open their 2026 NFL season against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football.
Update on Mia Bieniemy’s Condition
Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid provided an update on Mia Bieniemy’s condition on Wednesday during a press conference at training camp. He stated that she is “doing great” and showing significant improvement. “She’s doing better and great from where she was,” Reid told reporters. “Out of the ICU unit, happy about that. EB is still with her, that part’s important.” Eric Bieniemy, referred to as “EB” by Coach Reid, has remained by his wife’s side during this difficult time.
