Authorities in Humboldt County, California, have uncovered a disturbing scene at Miranda’s Rescue Animal Sanctuary, where the remains of over 100 dogs were found buried. The grim discovery came after law enforcement received an anonymous tip in April, sparking a multi-agency investigation into allegations of animal abuse, cruelty, fraud, and conspiracy.

Grim Discovery at Miranda’s Rescue

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, working alongside state and federal partners, announced last week that 117 intact dog carcasses were exhumed from two separate burial sites on the sanctuary’s property in Fortuna. Adding to the somber findings, investigators also located 21 canine skulls, hundreds of assorted bones, and six microchips in another nearby excavation area. The intact remains were found in various states of decomposition.

Further examination of the recovered dogs revealed a deeply troubling aspect of the case. Approximately 70 dogs were X-rayed on-site, with many showing evidence of bullet fragments. Forensic veterinarians have made a preliminary determination that a significant number of these animals likely died from gunshot wounds. The sheriff’s office indicated that the majority of the recovered dogs were microchipped, and analysts are diligently working to process this data to identify the animals and potentially piece together their stories.

Unaccounted For Animals and Troubling Evidence

The investigation has also pointed to a specific area within a barn that authorities believe may have served as a site where the dogs were killed. In this location, investigators recovered more than 600 dog collars, a stark visual testament to the sheer number of animals that passed through the sanctuary. Official records indicate that Miranda’s Rescue received at least 918 dogs since January 2025, yet only 116 adoptions have been officially confirmed. During the investigation, 71 dogs were found alive on the premises, leaving a staggering number of over 700 dogs unaccounted for.

Sheriff Vows Thorough Investigation

Sheriff William Honsal emphasized the extensive nature of the ongoing investigation. “This investigation is just getting started,” he stated. “There is a tremendous amount of data to process, witnesses to interview, and evidence to examine. The Major Crimes Division is laser focused on this case and will continue working with our state and federal partners to examine every lead.” The complexity of the evidence, including the microchip data and forensic findings, means the review process is expected to take a considerable amount of time.

Founder Responds to Allegations

Shannon Miranda, the owner and founder of Miranda’s Rescue Animal Sanctuary, has publicly addressed the allegations through a statement posted on the rescue’s website. Miranda, who claims to have dedicated over 30 years to animal rescue, pushed back against what he described as an incomplete and sometimes inaccurate portrayal of the sanctuary’s work. He sought to provide context for the difficult decisions made at the rescue.

Miranda acknowledged that the sanctuary has, in the past, euthanized animals, but asserted that such actions were reserved for rare circumstances. These included situations where an animal suffered from a terminal condition or posed a significant, ongoing danger to humans or other animals. He cited specific instances, such as a dog named Zora that attacked another dog after killing a feral cat, and another dog that lunged at a baby in a stroller before staff intervened. In both these cases, Miranda stated he made the “difficult decision to euthanize the dogs” due to observed behavior and the associated risks.

Ongoing Investigation and Legal Proceedings

As of the latest reports, no arrests or charges have been filed in connection with the discoveries at Miranda’s Rescue. However, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that the thorough review of evidence is a lengthy process, given the scale and intricacy of the investigation. Authorities continue to analyze microchip data and other collected evidence as they work to uncover the full scope of what transpired at the sanctuary.
