California Family Alleges Racially Motivated Attack at Maui Resort

A family from California has come forward with harrowing claims of being targeted in a racially motivated assault at a luxury resort in Maui. The incident, which allegedly involved a group hurling chairs and physically assaulting family members ranging from teenagers to seniors, occurred during a chaotic melee near the pool on the evening of July 17. Maui police confirmed they responded to the Kaanapali Alii resort in Lahaina around 10 p.m. to a report of a disorderly disturbance involving a large group.

Violent Confrontation Erupts at Kaanapali Alii

Upon arrival, officers observed that the situation had largely dispersed, with approximately 10 to 15 individuals remaining near the pool area. Several people present had sustained visible injuries. According to the Maui Police Department, the preliminary investigation identified seven victims from California, with ages spanning from 17 to 62. These individuals reported that a substantial group of juveniles allegedly initiated assaults against multiple members of their party before fleeing the scene.

Investigators learned from one victim that he and his family were relaxing near the pool when an unidentified male approached them, seemingly seeking assistance. This moment reportedly triggered a swift escalation, as several juvenile males then allegedly pursued the individual into the vicinity and subsequently turned their aggression towards others nearby. The situation rapidly devolved into a violent free-for-all.

Allegations of Racial Slurs and Indiscriminate Violence

Maui police stated that the group then allegedly began throwing chairs and physically assaulting numerous individuals in the area. The attacks were described as indiscriminate, affecting people of all ages, including elderly family members who were reportedly struck during the chaos. Family members speaking with local media outlets indicated that the alleged assailants repeatedly used racial slurs, specifically threatening to “beat up the haole boys” before the physical violence commenced. The term “haole,” a Hawaiian word, is commonly used to refer to foreigners or individuals of non-Hawaiian descent.

The family has expressed a strong desire for the assault to be investigated as a hate crime, a classification that Maui police have not yet made. One of the most severely injured victims was reportedly struck in the head with a chair while attempting to shield other family members. This individual suffered a significant head wound requiring 13 staples for treatment, according to accounts from the family.

Investigation and Arrests

Following the incident, the investigation led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man from Makawao on suspicion of second-degree assault. He was subsequently released as the inquiry progresses. The case is currently being handled as an assault and riot incident. Detectives have been actively interviewing those involved and are continuing to collect evidence to piece together the events of that night.

Resort’s Response and Cooperation

In a statement, Kaanapali Alii emphasized that the safety and well-being of its guests, residents, and staff are paramount. The resort confirmed that its security team responded immediately upon learning of the altercation, promptly contacting both the Maui Police Department and emergency medical services. Resort security remained on-site to assist until law enforcement and medical personnel arrived.

Kaanapali Alii stated it is fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation, providing surveillance footage and other relevant information. The resort also indicated it is conducting its own internal review of the incident. Regarding the family’s allegations of racial motivation, the resort acknowledged taking such claims seriously but advised against premature conclusions until the official investigation is complete.

“At this time, allegations regarding motive or the circumstances surrounding the incident have not been substantiated, and it would be inappropriate to speculate or draw conclusions while the investigation remains ongoing,” the resort said in its statement. The property did acknowledge receiving reports of threats, harassment, and disruptive behavior involving individuals connected to the incident prior to the outbreak of violence, but declined to elaborate further due to the active criminal investigation.

The resort reiterated its commitment to supporting the investigation and aiding those affected by the violence, stating, “Our focus remains on the well-being of our guests, residents and team members, and on assisting law enforcement in every way possible.”

Community Impact and Ongoing Inquiry

The incident has raised concerns within the community about safety and potential bias at tourist destinations. While police are treating the case as assault and riot, the family’s push for a hate crime classification highlights the sensitive nature of the allegations. Authorities are urging anyone with information or video footage related to the event to contact the Maui Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at (808) 244-6425.

The ongoing investigation aims to clarify the sequence of events, identify all responsible parties, and determine the underlying motives for the violent confrontation. The outcome could have significant implications for how such incidents are classified and addressed in the future.
