Two men in California are facing felony charges after allegedly stealing over $100,000 worth of tools, copper wire, and vehicles. Adding a peculiar twist to the alleged crime spree, authorities reported that the suspects may have documented their illicit activities by taking selfies while on the scene of the burglary, which occurred on July 6th in American Canyon.
The Incident Unfolds
The American Canyon Police Department received a report of a burglary at a business located in the 1100 block of Green Island Road. Responding officers quickly began an investigation, which soon linked two specific vehicles to the crime. Information regarding these vehicles was shared with other law enforcement agencies in the region.
First Suspect Detained
The following day, July 7th, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office intercepted one of the vehicles identified in connection with the burglary. The driver, identified as 53-year-old Daniel Lemas of Hayward, was detained. During the course of the investigation, evidence reportedly surfaced in the form of selfie photographs. Authorities allege these images captured Lemas participating in the burglary.
Lemas was subsequently arrested and booked into the Napa County Department of Corrections. He faces multiple felony charges directly related to the investigation, including burglary.
Second Suspect Apprehended
The investigation continued, leading police to the second vehicle associated with the break-in. On July 8th, the Hayward Police Department conducted a traffic stop on this vehicle, detaining its driver, 49-year-old Dennis Tylij, also of Hayward. American Canyon police officers responded to the location and took Tylij into custody.
Tylij was booked into the Napa County Department of Corrections, where he is being held on a felony conspiracy charge.
Recovery of Stolen Property
Following the arrests, investigators obtained and executed a search warrant at a residence located in the 3200 block of Arden Road in Hayward. During the search, law enforcement officers were able to recover a portion of the property that had been stolen during the burglary.
Bail and Custody Status
According to reports, Daniel Lemas has since posted bail, set at $25,000, and has been released from custody. Dennis Tylij, however, remains in jail, facing his charges.
