Actress Chrissy Metz has spoken out against the constant scrutiny surrounding her weight, asserting that critics will always find something to comment on, regardless of her choices. During a recent conversation on “The Tamsen Show” podcast, Metz addressed her decision to use GLP-1 medication for weight management and shared her frustration with persistent body-shaming remarks.

Metz, known for her role in “This Is Us,” acknowledged that negative comments and opinions about her body continue to surface. “I don’t know when people will stop doing that. I don’t think it ever will happen,” she remarked, reflecting on the relentless nature of public judgment.

She recounted an instance where a distant relative offered congratulations for “taking control of your weight,” framing it as a long-standing family issue. Metz pointed out the irony, noting that the relative herself struggles with her weight. While such comments from this particular relative don’t cut as deeply, Metz admitted that other remarks are “wild.”

“It’s interesting what people say cause would they ever say it to you on the streets? Never. Never,” Metz stated, highlighting the disconnect between online criticism and real-world interactions. She shared examples of comments she receives, ranging from critiques of her appearance like “them eyebrows” to contradictory remarks about her weight loss journey: “Why aren’t you losing weight? Oh, you’re losing weight?”

“It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter what you do,” she concluded. “And I know it’s not personal, but it can be taxing, but you sometimes just got to just shut it off cuz no matter what you do, somebody’s going to have something to say.”

Currently starring in the Broadway musical “& Juliet,” Metz views her persistence in pursuing her goals despite criticism as an “act of rebellion.” This sentiment echoes her earlier discussion on the “Today” show regarding her use of GLP-1 medication.

A New Approach to Health

Metz revealed on “The Tamsen Show” that she was initially hesitant about GLP-1 medications, describing herself as “skeptical” and “so afraid of even sort of partaking in” them. However, her perspective shifted significantly after her father’s passing due to complications from obesity.

“I have to do something about it,” she explained, referencing the profound impact of her father’s death. “And so, yeah…I feel better on the medication.”

One of the most significant benefits Metz has experienced is the reduction of what she calls “food noise” – the persistent, intrusive thoughts about eating. She described this internal chatter as being “loud” and expressed surprise that not everyone experiences it.

“I know it sounds so silly now, but I’m like, ‘Oh, not everybody hears that all the time? Oh, okay. Oh, there’s like something chemically off and metabolically off and hereditary, you know, issues,'” she shared. This realization, coupled with her father’s health struggles, motivated her to seek medical intervention.

Navigating Public Perception

The actress emphasized the double-edged sword of public attention, where any action or inaction can draw criticism. Whether she is perceived as losing weight or not, the commentary persists. This constant barrage, while not always taken personally, can be emotionally draining.

Metz’s strategy for coping involves a degree of detachment, recognizing that external opinions are often a reflection of the commenter rather than a valid critique of her choices. “You sometimes just got to just shut it off cuz no matter what you do, somebody’s going to have something to say,” she advised.

Her current partnership with Ro, a telehealth company offering various health services including weight loss solutions, signifies her proactive approach to managing her health. By sharing her experiences, Metz aims to shed light on the complexities of weight management and the often harsh realities of public judgment, encouraging a more compassionate perspective.

Metz’s journey highlights the personal nature of health decisions and the challenges faced by individuals in the public eye. Her candidness about using medication and her resilience against criticism underscore a commitment to her well-being, even amidst relentless public scrutiny.
