Colombian Nationals Arrested in California Carjacking Case
Two individuals from Colombia have been apprehended in California following a series of events that began with a violent carjacking and led authorities to a stolen luxury vehicle. The arrests underscore the role of advanced technology in law enforcement’s pursuit of suspects involved in serious crimes.
Stolen Vehicle Linked to Violent Crime
The incident traces back to July 11, when a 2015 Mercedes-Benz C300 was stolen during a carjacking that also involved an assault with a deadly weapon. The crime occurred in Hawthorne, California. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that the vehicle was not only taken by force but was also used in subsequent alleged criminal activities.
Several days after the initial carjacking, law enforcement received a critical alert. An automated license plate reader system flagged the stolen Mercedes as it traveled through Rolling Hills Estates. This technological alert allowed deputies to track the vehicle’s movements and initiate a search.
Expanding Investigation and Apprehension
As deputies actively searched for the Mercedes, further information emerged connecting the vehicle to another crime. Authorities revealed that the car had also been linked to a recent residential burglary in Torrance. This discovery broadened the scope of the investigation, indicating a pattern of criminal activity involving the stolen vehicle.
The pursuit culminated when deputies located the Mercedes-Benz. A traffic stop was initiated near the intersection of Palos Verdes Drive North and Rolling Vista Drive. Upon the vehicle coming to a halt, one of the occupants reportedly fled the scene on foot. This prompted deputies to quickly establish a perimeter to contain the area and facilitate the search for the fleeing passenger.
Arrests and Charges
The driver of the Mercedes, identified as 26-year-old Yareht Pedraza of Bogotá, Colombia, was taken into custody at the location of the traffic stop. Meanwhile, the passenger who had fled was the subject of an intensive search involving ground deputies and an aerial unit from the Sheriff’s Department. The coordinated effort proved effective, and the passenger was located and apprehended shortly thereafter.
The passenger, identified as 21-year-old Alan Pena Sabogn, also from Bogotá, Colombia, faces several charges. Authorities stated he was arrested on suspicion of failing to obey a lawful order, obstructing a peace officer, and providing false identification to authorities. Adding to the charges, officials noted that Sabogn had an existing felony warrant for burglary out of Colorado, which carried no bail.
Technology and Proactive Policing
A representative from the Sheriff’s Department highlighted the successful apprehension as a testament to the integration of technology and proactive policing strategies. The statement emphasized how the swift identification of suspects and their removal from the community were facilitated by the collaboration between deputies, dispatchers, and the Air Support unit.
