Ex-Teacher Faces New Child Abuse Material Charges
Former New Jersey Educator Indicted on Serious New Charges
A former middle school teacher in New Jersey, previously accused of an inappropriate relationship with a student, has been indicted on a dozen new charges. Among the most serious allegations are those involving the manufacturing of child sexual abuse material, according to official statements released Wednesday.
Ashley Fisler, 36, of Washington Township, now faces a 12-count indictment. The charges include sexual assault of a minor and a pattern of official misconduct. The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office detailed the indictment, outlining the allegations stemming from a relationship with a student who is now an adult.
Allegations Detail Relationship with Student
Prosecutors state that the alleged victim reported an unlawful sexual relationship with Fisler during his time as her student at Orchard Valley Middle School. The former student recounted multiple alleged sexual encounters that reportedly occurred in Fisler’s vehicle and within the classroom setting back in 2021.
Investigators reportedly uncovered text messages that are said to corroborate the alleged illicit nature of the relationship. Analysis of communication records, including a substantial volume of text messages collected by investigators, suggests Fisler continued to exchange thousands of messages, many of them sexually explicit, with the former student even after he had progressed to high school. In one instance detailed within the collected messages, the former student reportedly expressed that the interactions had left him “mentally broken.”
Defense Challenges Evidence
Rocco Cipparone, representing Fisler, has publicly stated that the prosecution’s evidence is insufficient to support the accusations. He has argued that the text messages highlighted by investigators were presented without proper context. “The selective, salacious texts that were recited by the prosecution lack context,” Cipparone stated in a previous court appearance.
Escalation of Charges
Fisler was initially apprehended in March, facing six counts of first-degree sexual assault of a minor, along with one count each of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree official misconduct. The superseding indictment has significantly expanded the charges, adding counts of second-degree pattern of official misconduct, first-degree manufacturing child sexual abuse material, third-degree possession of child sexual abuse material, and third-degree distribution of obscenity to a minor.
Potential penalties vary significantly with the severity of the charges. Conviction on any first-degree charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. Second-degree charges could result in up to 10 years imprisonment, while third-degree offenses carry a maximum of five years.
Background and Employment Status
Records indicate Fisler taught social studies within the Washington Township school district from 2014 until June 2023. Officials have confirmed that she is no longer employed by the Washington Township School District or any other educational institution.
