Florida Driver Crashes into School Bus During Chase, 19 Kids Unharmed
A high-speed chase through Florida ended abruptly when a driver, allegedly fleeing a traffic stop, crashed head-on into a school bus carrying 19 children. The dramatic incident unfolded Tuesday morning, with the driver then abandoning his damaged car and attempting to escape on foot before being apprehended. Miraculously, all 19 students on board the bus were reported safe and without injury.
Chase Begins Over Speeding Allegation
The sequence of events began around 7:20 a.m. as a deputy was conducting traffic enforcement in a school zone near The Villages Intermediate Center. According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy observed a vehicle traveling 17 miles per hour over the posted speed limit on County Road 466. The deputy initiated a U-turn and activated his emergency lights to pull the driver over.
Instead of stopping, the driver, identified as 23-year-old Qahiem Williams, allegedly accelerated. Authorities reported that Williams then sideswiped two vehicles while navigating a traffic light. The sheriff’s office indicated that these collisions caused significant damage to Williams’ vehicle, including its axle.
Head-On Collision with School Bus
Following the initial evasive maneuvers and collisions, Williams’ damaged vehicle reportedly veered into oncoming traffic. It then collided head-on with a Sumter County school bus traveling on County Road 103. Footage captured from inside the bus appears to show the driver’s side door of Williams’ car opening just moments before the impact.
The force of the collision was substantial, but the robust construction of the school bus and the quick actions of the driver ensured the safety of the young passengers. Emergency services responded to the scene, but initial reports confirmed no injuries among the children or the bus driver.
Suspect Flees, Apprehended on Foot
Immediately after the crash, Williams allegedly exited his disabled vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Law enforcement officers pursued him. Body camera footage documented a deputy chasing Williams through the area before successfully apprehending him near a local Walmart.
Charges and Sheriff’s Statement
Qahiem Williams was taken into custody and is facing a litany of charges. These include fleeing or eluding law enforcement, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting an officer, hit-and-run, and a moving traffic violation. Records also revealed that Williams had two outstanding warrants in Sumter County for similar offenses: fleeing or eluding and driving with a suspended license.
Sumter County Sheriff Patrick Breeden expressed strong condemnation of Williams’ actions, emphasizing the extreme danger posed to the children. “I have zero tolerance when it comes to actions that put our children’s lives in danger,” Sheriff Breeden stated. “This suspect has a history of this type of behavior and our community is safer with him off our streets.”
Suspect’s Status
Before being transported to the Sumter County Detention Center, Williams received medical clearance. He is reportedly being held without bond as the legal process moves forward.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by reckless driving and the importance of traffic laws, particularly in areas frequented by schoolchildren. While the driver’s alleged actions created a terrifying situation, the outcome was fortunate, with no injuries reported among the 19 children aboard the bus.
