A man is in custody after allegedly setting a Tampa restaurant ablaze with a flaming propane tank and then confronting deputies with knives. The incident occurred Tuesday morning, prompting a significant response from law enforcement and fire rescue crews.

Dramatic Confrontation Unfolds at Tampa Restaurant

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance at a local restaurant around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, deputies encountered a scene of chaos: the interior of the establishment was filled with smoke and flames, and a propane tank outside the building was also burning. The situation escalated quickly as officers spotted Rubiel Maceo Castillo, 53, still inside the restaurant. Authorities reported that Castillo was armed with two knives and refused to comply with repeated demands from deputies to drop the weapons and exit the building.

Body camera footage captured the tense moments as deputies issued urgent commands. “Drop the knife now. Do it now,” one officer can be heard stating in the video. Working in conjunction with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, deputies managed to extinguish the fire before apprehending Castillo. He was subsequently booked into the county jail and is being held without bond.

Allegations Detail Escalation of Violence

According to court documents, Castillo’s alleged actions inside the restaurant were violent and dangerous. Investigators claim he initially brandished two knives and advanced on several individuals within the establishment. When a woman attempted to intervene, she sustained a cut to her wrist. Following this, investigators allege that Castillo proceeded to cut a gas line connected to a grill before seizing a propane tank and igniting it, causing the fire.

Surveillance footage released by the sheriff’s office appears to corroborate these accounts, showing a man carrying a lit propane tank through the restaurant as flames spread. The body camera footage also documented the confrontation leading up to Castillo’s arrest and the subsequent efforts to quell the blaze.

Charges and Potential Motive

Rubiel Maceo Castillo faces a slate of serious charges, including first-degree arson of an occupied structure, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and criminal mischief resulting in over $1,000 in damages, among other offenses. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has not officially released a motive for the incident.

However, reports suggest that investigators are exploring the possibility of a domestic dispute as the underlying cause. It is believed that the incident may have stemmed from a conflict involving Castillo and his wife.

Community Impact and Safety Concerns

The incident has raised concerns about public safety, particularly given the nature of the alleged attack and the use of fire as a weapon. Restaurants, often bustling with activity, are particularly vulnerable to such violent acts. The swift response from law enforcement and fire services was crucial in preventing further escalation and potential loss of life.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the full sequence of events and determine the precise motive behind Castillo’s alleged actions. The outcome of the legal proceedings will depend on the evidence presented and the specific details of the charges filed.
