A family in Rockmart, Georgia, is mourning the loss of their beloved pet donkey, HeeHaw, who was fatally shot by a police officer early Sunday morning. The incident occurred on the family’s property while officers were searching for a missing child. The child was later found safe at a nearby church.

Tragic Encounter on Family Property

Hannah Israel, 30, recounted the distressing events that unfolded around 12:45 a.m. on Sunday. She stated that officers entered her family’s pasture in Polk County without prior notification. While searching the area for a missing youngster, the officers encountered HeeHaw, the family’s young donkey.

According to Israel’s account, shared on social media, the officers claimed HeeHaw approached them making noise and that they perceived a threat. She reported that the officers attempted to use a Taser on the animal before shooting and killing him. “HeeHaw was shot and killed in his OWN pasture for doing what donkeys do. Alerting to a stranger,” Israel wrote, questioning the legality of the action and vowing to pursue legal recourse.

A Cherished Family Member

The loss has left the family devastated. “He was my SON!! We miss him so much where is safe?? When my own baby was shot in his own home?” Israel expressed in further posts, highlighting the deep bond she shared with HeeHaw. Photos from the aftermath show Israel overcome with grief, cradling her lifeless pet, whose eyes remained open in the stillness of death.

Israel described HeeHaw’s affectionate and almost human-like personality. “He would normally be standing right over there talking while I’m talking because he thought he could talk like a person could talk,” she told local news. She explained that HeeHaw would greet everyone with enthusiastic braying and a distinctive, playful sound, stemming from his love for people and his perceived place among them. His integration into the family was so profound that he even slept in Israel’s bed during his first three months of life.

Official Response and Investigation

The Cedartown Police Department has acknowledged the incident and confirmed that the officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave. In a statement, the department announced that it has transferred the investigation into the shooting of the animal to the Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement Division. This external agency will conduct a thorough investigation while the officer remains on leave.

Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsom confirmed the existence of body camera footage related to the incident, which he has reviewed. “That search took them to the incident location where this very unfortunate and heartbreaking event occurred,” Newsom stated, acknowledging the profound sadness felt by the family and the wider community. He expressed empathy, recognizing the donkey as a cherished member of the family, a sentiment he shares.

Community Support and Legal Action

Investigators from the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Law Enforcement Division were present at Elsberry Farm on Monday to commence their inquiry into HeeHaw’s death. In the wake of the tragedy, Hannah Israel has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the legal expenses associated with seeking justice for HeeHaw. She has stipulated that any remaining funds after legal costs will be directed towards the farm, the care of other animals, and potentially establishing a foundation in HeeHaw’s memory.

The fundraising effort has seen significant community support, raising over $113,000 by Tuesday morning. Israel’s description on the fundraiser page reiterates her pain: “My bottle baby donkey ‘HeeHaw’ was killed in his own pasture on Saturday night by trespassing cops.” She emphasized HeeHaw’s role not just as a pet but as a beloved family member who brought joy to many through his participation in petting zoos and interactions with the public.

Israel has retained legal counsel to navigate the process of seeking accountability and justice for the untimely death of her cherished companion. She stressed that any surplus funds from the donations would not be used for personal benefit but would be dedicated to animal welfare and related initiatives.
