Jenny Racicot, the woman who has leveled serious allegations against Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, has firmly rejected the notion that her claims are politically motivated. Speaking on Monday, Racicot stated that her decision to come forward stemmed from a deeply felt moral imperative, asserting, “There are a lot of men in this world relying on the silence of women to be where they are, and I don’t want to contribute to that.”

When questioned by CNN’s Jake Tapper about potential backlash from Platner supporters who suggest her allegations are politically driven, Racicot expressed strong disagreement. She revealed that she grappled with a significant moral conflict because she actually aligns with Platner on political issues. “I really agree with his politics. I think we need somebody with those political stances and who are willing to do the work,” Racicot explained. “I see his political videos. They get me fired up as well. I understand why people want someone like him in office, and I felt like me coming forward would essentially, potentially take that away.” Despite the gravity of her accusations, Racicot indicated that she would not necessarily advise people against voting for Platner.

Tapper also pointed out that Racicot had not used the term “rape” in her initial account and inquired if she believed Platner had raped her. Racicot responded affirmatively, stating, “By definition? Yes, absolutely.”

Detailed Allegations Surface

Racicot’s detailed allegations were first brought to light by Politico on Monday. In interviews with the outlet, she recounted an incident in 2021 where she alleges Platner forced her to have sex against her will. Platner has issued a strong denial of these claims.

According to Racicot’s account to Politico, Platner was “almost blackout drunk” during the alleged incident. She recalled the event vividly: “I remember him grabbing my pelvis and being really forceful of me. I remember the specific moment where I thought to myself, like, ‘This is no longer my choice.’” She further described to Tapper that during the encounter, Platner would intersperse his actions with apologies before resuming what he was doing.

Platner Responds to Allegations

In the wake of the allegations, Platner’s campaign released a video in which he described the claims as “troubling, serious and false.” He stated unequivocally, “Any accusation of nonconsensual behavior is categorically false.” Platner discussed his campaign experiences before addressing the reporting, noting that his team was “taking the time to reflect on the best path forward” due to the “inaccuracy of the reporting.”

Political Fallout and Previous Scrutiny

Following Politico’s report, several prominent Democrats withdrew their endorsements of Platner, and some called for him to exit the Senate race entirely. The Maine Democratic Party issued a statement urging his withdrawal. This is not the first controversy to engulf Platner’s campaign; he has previously faced scrutiny over a tattoo on his chest featuring a Nazi symbol known as a “Totenkopf.”

Earlier in the year, in June, The New York Times published an article detailing allegations against Platner from women he had dated in the past, including Racicot. While Racicot had spoken with The Times regarding her relationship with Platner, she had not provided specifics about the 2021 incident at that time. The Times reported that Racicot had mentioned an instance in 2021 where Platner arrived at her house drunk, despite her request that he not visit. She declined to offer further details but indicated that she ceased contact shortly after the episode, finding his behavior “reckless” and “unsettling.”
