Hasan Piker Criticized for Remarks on American Jews and Israel

A prominent far-left Twitch streamer, Hasan Piker, is facing sharp criticism from a Democratic congresswoman and Jewish organizations over comments he made regarding American Jews’ support for Israel. Representative Hillary Scholten of Michigan has denounced Piker’s remarks, which she characterized as inciting violence and specifically targeting a Michigan elected official.

Scholten Denounces Piker’s Rhetoric

In a statement released on Monday, Rep. Scholten strongly condemned Hasan Piker, calling him “a hack who thrives on hate, shock and awe because he lacks substance.” The congresswoman expressed particular alarm over Piker’s alleged “talk of violence against American Jews,” noting that he directly named Michigan state Senator Jeremy Moss, who is also a candidate for Congress. “We should all be calling out this disgusting rhetoric so it loses its grip on our politics once and for all. It has no place in Michigan, and no place in our country,” Scholten stated.

Piker, who commands a significant following across social media platforms, has been increasingly visible in Michigan’s political landscape during the current election cycle. He notably endorsed Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who previously won a primary against Rep. Haley Stevens. El-Sayed himself faced scrutiny for appearing alongside Piker during his campaign, with some critics deeming the streamer’s rhetoric too extreme.

Rep. Scholten had previously supported Stevens, describing her as a “smart, capable, and common-sense leader.” She also publicly commended Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer for her endorsement of Stevens.

El-Sayed Responds to Piker’s Comments

Abdul El-Sayed also addressed Piker’s controversial statements. While not issuing an outright condemnation of Piker, El-Sayed denounced antisemitism and any rhetoric that could endanger the Jewish community. “I believe all Americans deserve the right to advocate for what they believe without fear of violence. This is particularly true for communities that have been intimidated for their beliefs in the past,” El-Sayed wrote in a statement. He emphasized his commitment to the safety of the Jewish community, equating it to his commitment to his own daughters’ safety. “Antisemitism is a scourge, and we need to address it in all its forms. And I stand against any rhetoric that puts the community at risk,” he added.

El-Sayed also took pains to clarify that Piker did not represent his campaign, stating, “nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople.” This statement came amidst a separate controversy where El-Sayed had previously disavowed Piker’s comments related to 9/11, while also decrying “cancel culture.”

Jewish Organizations Weigh In

Beyond political figures, prominent Jewish organizations have also voiced strong criticism of Piker’s remarks. The American Jewish Committee (AJC) stated on Monday that by displaying an image of Senator Moss, Piker had effectively “put a target on the backs of Sen. Moss, Jewish candidates and officeholders, and American Jews alike.” The AJC further asserted on the platform X, “Blaming Jews for the antisemitism directed at them is itself antisemitism.” The organization issued a challenge to public officials who have previously shared platforms with Piker: “Every public official who has shared his platform now has a choice: denounce this and walk away, or be complicit. There is no third option.”

The Content of Piker’s Remarks

The controversy stems from comments Piker made during a livestream on August 20. During the stream, Piker appeared to issue a warning to American Jews regarding their support for Israel, suggesting that such allegiance could lead to repercussions against them domestically. “People don’t f— with Israel any longer. And if Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they’re singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone will come around and take action not against Israel, mind you, but against American Jews,” Piker stated. Notably, an image of Senator Moss was visible in the background during this part of the stream.

Moss Addresses Fabricated Audio Controversy

Piker’s comments surfaced during a period of heightened sensitivity, partly fueled by a controversy surrounding an audio clip that circulated online. This clip purportedly featured Moss stating that the primary objective of his congressional campaign was to ensure continued U.S. support for Israel. However, the Michigan Democrat vehemently denied the authenticity of the recording, describing it as “a manipulated and unsourced audio, with things I never did and never would say.”

Senator Moss used this incident to highlight broader concerns about misinformation. “We are in a dangerous era of disinformation. Circulating a lie because it affirms your bias or belief is equally bad whether it comes from the left or the right. We all have a choice not to spread fabricated images, videos, and audio about candidates and campaigns. We all have a role in stopping the erosion of our democracy,” Moss commented on the fabricated audio clip controversy, emphasizing the need for responsible information sharing.
