In a display of remarkable resilience, Ace, a decorated German Shepherd from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, made an emotional return to his department on Tuesday, just days after sustaining critical injuries while bravely protecting three deputies. The seven-year-old canine lost a front leg after being shot during an incident last week, but his spirit remains undeterred.

A Hero’s Sacrifice

The incident unfolded as deputies attempted to apprehend 27-year-old Angel Bowers, who had failed to appear in court. Authorities reported that Bowers allegedly opened fire, discharging at least four rounds toward the officers. During the confrontation, Ace sprang into action, shielding the three deputies from the gunfire. While his swift intervention undoubtedly saved lives, Ace was struck in his left front leg, a devastating injury that shattered the bone and severed a major artery, leading to significant blood loss.

Ace’s partner and handler, Deputy Natalie Oestreich, immediately rendered aid, stabilizing his wounds before carefully carrying him to safety. From there, Ace was transported to Parkway Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Lakeland. After initial stabilization, he was airlifted via Tampa General Hospital Aeromed to the Veterinary Medical Center at Lakewood Ranch for specialized surgical care. Veterinarians worked for several hours to amputate his damaged front leg.

On Sunday, the sheriff’s office shared heartwarming video footage of deputies greeting an energetic Ace as he prepared to leave the veterinary facility. The post from the sheriff’s office humorously noted, “Upon waking from the anesthesia, Ace attempted to walk out of there. He has not been deterred since. In fact he outran the camera attempting to film his release this afternoon!”
