The incident occurred around 12:20 a.m. in a Houston Heights neighborhood. Baines was driving when a shirtless man suddenly darted across the street directly in front of his car, with two Houston Police Department officers in close pursuit. Dashcam footage captured the moment an officer urgently flagged Baines down. As he stopped, one officer quickly approached and, without hesitation, hopped into the front passenger seat.
“Hey, give me a ride over there please,” the officer was heard saying in the video. “Go, go that way… go, go, go, go, go!” Baines, understandably confused, asked for direction, while the officers pointed him toward the suspect’s path. After a brief drive, the first officer signaled to her partner, who was carrying a flashlight. He then opened the back door and joined them in the backseat of the Uber.

For several minutes, the officers utilized Baines’s vehicle as they navigated the area, attempting to locate the suspect. Speaking later about the experience, Baines told Storyful, “It caught me completely off guard. I’ve never had anything like that happen driving. I was surprised but just did what the officer asked in the moment.”

The suspect was allegedly upset over a perceived theft and had threatened a woman and her children.
