Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville offered a somber, yet critical, assessment of the late Senator Lindsey Graham’s political legacy, characterizing it as one “defined by duplicity.” Speaking on Wednesday, Carville stated that while he holds no pleasure in discussing the career of a recently deceased figure, Graham’s tenure in Washington warrants a candid reflection.

A Complex Political Figure

Carville recalled Graham’s early days as a prominent figure during the impeachment proceedings against former President Bill Clinton. “Let’s give him all the credit in the world,” Carville remarked, referencing Graham’s role as an impeachment manager. “Remember the great moral titan Henry Hyde and that whole crowd. And yeah, he was a little bit more than just for impeachment. He was the most aggressive.”

While acknowledging Graham’s personal charisma, Carville expressed his core view on the senator’s political trajectory. “I knew him. He could be personable, but I don’t think the man has had a… sorry, I don’t want anybody to get sick or die, that’s not it,” Carville clarified, emphasizing his respect for life. “But I think his political career is mostly defined by duplicity. Just my own view.”

Senator Graham passed away on Saturday night at the age of 71 due to an aortic dissection, a complication stemming from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. His death sent ripples through the political establishment, given his consistent presence and active role in the Senate. He had been slated to appear on NBC’s “Meet the Press” the following morning.

Reactions to Graham’s Passing

The passing of one of the Republican Party’s most visible senators inevitably sparked a range of commentary. Fellow political observers and commentators shared their perspectives on Graham’s long and often controversial career.

Al Hunt, a co-host, described Graham as a “character” who navigated different phases throughout his life. Hunt first encountered Graham shortly after his 1994 House election, noting that he seemed distinct from many Southern Republicans of that era. “Young, kind of funny,” Hunt recalled.

Hunt further elaborated on Graham’s evolution, particularly his close alliance with Senator John McCain. He recounted how Graham was instrumental in policy matters and possessed a wit that led Hunt to select him for the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Committee, seeking individuals who were both “smart and fun.”

However, Hunt pointed to a significant shift in Graham’s political alignment as McCain’s health declined. “Then as McCain was dying, he turned to a new leader, a new guru because he always wanted to be a player, and that was Donald Trump,” Hunt observed. Hunt suggested that while Graham’s direct influence might have been overstated, he played a notable role in foreign policy debates, advocating constructively for Ukraine while exerting a detrimental influence on discussions regarding Iran and policy toward Israel.

Concluding his thoughts, Hunt stated, “I just think Lindsey Graham was a force in American politics for 30-some years and, like most people, if you get too close to Trump, you get soiled.”

Graham’s Legislative Journey

Lindsey Graham served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003. During his time in the House, he was a key participant in the impeachment trial of then-President Bill Clinton, a period that significantly shaped his early national profile.

In 2002, Graham transitioned to the U.S. Senate, winning a seat he would hold for over two decades. He was re-elected three times, building a reputation as a prominent voice on national security and foreign policy issues. At the time of his death, he was actively campaigning for a fifth term, which would have extended his Senate service into 2026.

Graham’s career, spanning over three decades in Washington, was marked by significant policy battles, shifting alliances, and a distinctive public persona that often drew both praise and sharp criticism. His interactions with various political figures, from impeachment managers to presidents, formed the backdrop of his enduring impact on American politics.
