Justin Pearson, a prominent figure among the group of Tennessee lawmakers dubbed the “Tennessee Three,” has secured the Democratic nomination for the 9th Congressional District. The victory came Thursday in a primary election held in a newly redrawn electoral map for the Memphis-area district. Pearson, currently representing District 86 in the state House, emerged victorious over fellow Democratic candidates State Sen. London Lamar, community activist Marion LaTroy Alexandria-Williams, and attorney Jim Torino.
Pearson’s campaign was notably well-funded, with a war chest significantly larger than those of his primary opponents, a testament to extensive fundraising efforts throughout his campaign. He is set to face the Republican nominee in the general election this November.
National Support and Progressive Backing
Pearson entered the primary with considerable backing from national progressive figures. Key endorsements came from members of “the Squad,” a progressive caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Summer Lee of Pennsylvania, among others, publicly supported Pearson, even participating in a campaign rally in Memphis last month. This alignment highlights Pearson’s strong ties to the national progressive movement.
Further support for Pearson’s campaign came from various left-wing advocacy groups, including Justice Democrats, the Working Families Party, MoveOn, and Indivisible. These organizations have consistently championed progressive candidates and causes.
From Statehouse Protest to Congressional Bid
Pearson gained national recognition in 2023 following a protest advocating for gun control on the Tennessee House floor. The demonstration occurred in the aftermath of the tragic shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville, which resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including three young children. In response to the protest, Republican lawmakers moved to expel Pearson and his colleague, State Rep. Justin Jones. While both were initially expelled, they were later reinstated to their seats through special elections.
Another Democrat involved in the protest, Gloria Johnson of Knoxville, reportedly avoided expulsion by a narrow margin, surviving the vote by a single vote, according to media accounts.
District Reshaped by Redistricting
The primary election Pearson won was held in Tennessee’s newly configured 9th Congressional District. This redrawing of the state’s electoral map significantly altered the political landscape, particularly for Memphis. The previous map had largely consolidated the heavily Democratic city into a single district, ensuring a reliable seat for Tennessee Democrats in an otherwise Republican-dominated state.
However, the recent redistricting efforts divided Memphis across three districts that lean Republican. This shift prompted the retirement of longtime Democratic Representative Steve Cohen, who had represented the area for years. Prior to this map change, Cohen served as the sole Democrat in Tennessee’s nine-member congressional delegation, which consisted of eight Republicans since 2023. The new map, designed to favor Republican candidates, is projected to make all nine congressional seats in Tennessee more competitive for the GOP.

With the Democratic primary concluded, Justin Pearson now turns his attention to the general election. His campaign’s substantial financial advantage positions him as a formidable contender.
