Minnesota’s gubernatorial race is heating up, with Republican challenger Lisa Demuth questioning Senator Amy Klobuchar’s commitment to tackling the state’s significant fraud issues. Demuth asserts that Klobuchar, despite campaigning on combating fraud, has a notable silence on the massive social services scandal that has shaken the state.

Scandal’s Scope and Klobuchar’s Silence

The controversy centers on the “Feeding Our Future” scandal, which initially involved an estimated $250 million in fraudulent activity but has since ballooned into a broader social services fraud investigation potentially reaching over $9 billion, according to prosecutors. This crisis first surfaced in late January 2022.

A review of official press releases from Senator Klobuchar’s Senate office between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2025, revealed no direct mention of the “Feeding Our Future” scandal or the wider Minnesota social services fraud. Furthermore, key terms such as “Minnesota fraud,” “social services fraud,” “Medicaid fraud,” “child nutrition fraud,” and “DHS fraud” were conspicuously absent from over a thousand press releases during this period. While Klobuchar’s office did issue releases addressing other types of fraud, the specific, large-scale scandal plaguing Minnesota was not a topic of public communication from her office.

Republican Criticism Mounts

Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth has been vocal in her criticism, highlighting Klobuchar’s perceived inaction. “As Feeding Our Future was breaking and all of the fraud that was being talked about, the absent voice that I was noticing was Senator Klobuchar,” Demuth stated in an interview. “She, with her extended time, twenty years as a senator, could have held hearings. But not only did she not hold hearings, the hearing that took place a few months ago about fraud here in the state of Minnesota she didn’t even attend.”

Demuth elaborated on her concerns during a recent speech, where she outlined her own plan to combat fraud. “Billions of our tax dollars stolen,” she posted on the social platform X. “It’s time for change.” Demuth argues that Klobuchar’s twenty-year tenure in the Senate should have equipped her to address such a significant theft of taxpayer funds more proactively.

Klobuchar’s Campaign Focus vs. Past Record

Since announcing her candidacy for governor, Klobuchar has made combating fraud a central theme of her campaign. She recently released a campaign advertisement promising a state audit on her first day in office to “root out waste, fraud, and abuse.” Klobuchar herself posted on X, “It’s time for results, not excuses.”

However, Demuth challenges this newfound focus, questioning Klobuchar’s engagement over the years. “My question is, where were you for the last 10 years, but absolutely the last eight years?” Demuth asked. “She could have done press conferences, she could have partnered with Governor Walz. She has called Governor Walz an exceptional governor, ‘he’s a great governor.’ Back when he was running for vice president, she was giving all of his accolades. Where was she to help him where our state was falling apart? I think it’s a little bit too late for her to say that this was really a priority.”

Klobuchar secured a victory in the primary election and is positioned as the favorite to succeed Governor Tim Walz, who decided not to seek re-election amid the ongoing fraud scandal. Demuth suggests that Klobuchar’s past record, coupled with her support for Walz, could be a difficult hurdle for voters to overlook when considering her platform on fraud prevention.

Republican Efforts to Address Fraud

The fraud scandal has become a significant issue for Republicans in Minnesota, with candidates arguing that voters across the political spectrum are deeply concerned. Michele Tafoya, a Senate hopeful, previously told Fox News Digital that constituents are “ready for a change.”

Demuth highlighted her own legislative efforts, emphasizing that upon becoming Minnesota House Speaker in 2025, she prioritized fraud crackdowns by establishing the Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee. She frames her candidacy as a clear choice for voters seeking a leader with a proven track record.

“Who are Minnesotans gonna trust for their next governor?” Demuth posed. “Somebody that has just decided to talk about fraud now that they’re running for office or someone that has been fighting fraud this entire time? And I think I am the most trustworthy when it comes to ending fraud and respecting taxpayer dollars as your next governor.”

Klobuchar’s campaign was contacted for comment regarding these allegations.
