Kyle Shanahan’s Near-Fatal Eye Injury in Car Crash Revealed by Chris Simms

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan narrowly avoided a catastrophic injury that could have cost him his right eye during a severe car accident earlier this month, according to NFL analyst Chris Simms. Simms, a close friend of Shanahan’s, shared harrowing details of the incident, which occurred on July 14, describing the coach’s injuries as “jarring” and “significant.”

A Close Call for the 49ers Coach

Speaking on “PFT Live,” Simms recounted receiving graphic images from Shanahan’s wife, Mandy, in the immediate aftermath of the crash. “When you first see it, and it’s fresh, and some of the cuts are still wide open, I mean, it’s jarring,” Simms stated. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, revealing, “He was this close to maybe losing his right eye.”

The accident, which involved Shanahan’s vehicle colliding with another SUV near his Northern California home, resulted in a cascade of injuries for the respected NFL coach. Beyond the near-loss of his eye, Shanahan sustained a broken nose, three fractured ribs, and a broken hand. The facial injuries alone required over 40 stitches, and he also suffered a severe concussion, as reported by ESPN.

The 49ers organization confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that Shanahan’s injuries were “non-life threatening.” The team indicated that he would participate in training camp activities on a limited basis as he recovered. “Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care,” the statement added.

The Visible Scars and Emotional Toll

Simms pointed to his own forehead, illustrating the extent of Shanahan’s visible injuries. “The scar is so big right here,” he said, describing the sight as “just crazy to see.” While Shanahan himself has not yet publicly addressed the crash, Simms offered insight into his friend’s emotional state.

“He was emotional about it because he realized how close it was to being just a complete, you know, utter disaster,” Simms explained. He noted that Shanahan was also deeply concerned about the well-being of the other driver involved in the collision. “He’s very concerned about the woman he got in the accident with and how she is and handling that situation. So there’s just a lot there. And I think it was a lot for him to process.”

Training Camp and Recovery

Despite the severity of his injuries, Shanahan was observed at 49ers training camp on Sunday, albeit attempting to shield his face with a baseball hat and sunglasses. General Manager John Lynch confirmed that Shanahan would be following concussion protocols, indicating that the head injury was still presenting challenges during his recovery.

During Shanahan’s limited capacity at the start of training camp, assistant head coach Chris Foerster has been stepping in to manage team activities. The 49ers are preparing for their season opener on September 10 against the Los Angeles Rams, a historic game set to be the first NFL contest played in Australia.
