Lewis Hamilton Details Severe Neck Injury Sustained in Testing Accident
Amidst the buzz surrounding Formula 1’s current stop at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, a significant revelation has emerged regarding seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. The British driver, who recently secured a triumphant victory at the Spanish Grand Prix – his first with Ferrari and 106th career win – has disclosed the extent of a serious neck injury he suffered during a private preseason test earlier this year.
While the accident itself was previously acknowledged, the severity of Hamilton’s injury remained undisclosed until now. The incident occurred at the very same Barcelona circuit where he achieved his recent podium finish, adding a layer of irony to the situation.
The Impact of the Crash
Hamilton described the harrowing experience, stating, “I hit the wall very hard last year in testing.” He elaborated on the physical consequences, explaining that the impact “knocked out one of the discs in my neck, which was into the nerve.” This injury rendered him significantly incapacitated for approximately nine weeks, severely limiting his activities.
During this challenging period, Hamilton underwent daily chiropractic treatments and faced considerable difficulty sleeping. “I had painkillers, I had to get an injection,” he recounted. “I did everything I could to try to fix it.”
Pushing Through the Pain
Remarkably, Hamilton participated in preseason testing and even competed in several races during those nine weeks, all while managing his debilitating neck injury. Formula 1 drivers are conditioned to endure immense G-forces, making the prospect of racing with such an injury particularly arduous. The physical demands of the sport are extreme, and pushing through them with a compromised neck highlights Hamilton’s resilience and determination.
Looking Ahead to Austria
Following his commanding performance in Spain, Hamilton is aiming for another strong showing at the Austrian Grand Prix. However, his weekend in Austria has not begun with the same momentum. He secured fifth place in both of Friday’s practice sessions. Despite this, he managed to outperform his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc, in both sessions.
