A former prominent Democratic fundraiser has sharply criticized President Joe Biden’s decision to release a new memoir, suggesting the book will do more harm than good for both the President and the Democratic Party. Lindy Li, who previously held a significant role in fundraising for the party, believes Biden’s upcoming book, titled “Promise Me, America,” is a misstep that will only reopen old wounds and remind Democrats of painful election cycles.

Book Launch Sparks Controversy

Li’s critique comes as President Biden announced his memoir, describing it as a reflection on national challenges, key decisions, and his rationale for seeking reelection in 2024. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Biden stated the book would cover “the challenges we face as a nation. About the decisions I made and why I made them.” He also indicated it would address his choice to run again and his decision to step aside from previous political considerations.

However, this announcement was met with immediate skepticism and mockery from various political figures and commentators. Conservative communicator Steve Guest sarcastically dubbed the announcement “The first lie of Joe Biden’s book launch: ‘I’ve written a book.’” Similarly, Outkick founder Clay Travis questioned the book’s marketability, asking, “Who in the world is buying this book?” Brent Scher, editor-in-chief of The Daily Wire, echoed this sentiment, wondering, “Who do we think wrote this book.” Missouri Republican Rep. Jason Smith even alluded to past controversies, asking, “Did the autopen write this too?”

Fundraiser’s Inside Perspective

Lindy Li, who is preparing to release her own book, “Unburdened,” later this year, claims to have had access to internal Democratic Party discussions and research. She asserts that even before Biden’s eventual withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, his support within his own party was tenuous. Li suggested that Biden’s decision to write a book, rather than enjoy retirement, is influenced by financial necessity, implying that both he and his wife, the former First Lady, are driven by money.

“Jill has him writing books that no one wants to read instead of fully enjoying his retirement,” Li stated, drawing a parallel to Mrs. Biden’s role in encouraging his presidential run. “Just like she had him out running for president — a presidency that no one wanted, not even Democrats — instead of enjoying his retirement. He should have been in retirement 10, 20 years ago, but they need the money.”

Li further elaborated on the party’s internal struggles, suggesting a desire to move past the 2024 election loss. She believes Biden’s memoir will reignite difficult conversations about why he wasn’t urged to step aside earlier, potentially alienating Democrats who wish to focus on future endeavors. “It’s very clear they were trying to hide the fact that instead of having a candidate they could be proud of, they were busy hiding a candidate that they were deeply ashamed of,” she remarked.

Concerns Over Candidate’s Image

Li recounted personal experiences that she believes illustrate the campaign’s efforts to manage Biden’s public image, particularly concerning his perceived fitness for office. She recalled an event in 2023 where her phone was confiscated by the Biden campaign. According to Li, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) frequently took phones from major donors with social media presences.

“The [Democratic National Committee] was routinely confiscating the phones of top donors with social media followings,” Li explained. “They took away my phone because they knew I was a prolific tweeter. And I posted something on Instagram that night and a finance director from the DNC called me at around 10 or 11 that same night to instruct me to delete everything from Instagram about Biden that I posted that day.”

The reason for such stringent measures, Li contends, was the perception that Biden appeared “infirm” and “weak.” She suggests that the book launch, by bringing renewed attention to Biden’s decision-making and past performance, risks exacerbating these concerns and undermining any efforts to present a strong, unified front for the party moving forward.

A Difficult Road Ahead?

The controversy surrounding the book launch highlights ongoing debates about President Biden’s age, cognitive abilities, and suitability for high office. Critics argue that a memoir focusing on his decisions and reelection bid will inevitably draw scrutiny to these sensitive issues, potentially overshadowing any positive narrative the President or his campaign hopes to convey.

Li’s perspective, informed by her alleged insider knowledge, suggests that the Democratic Party itself grappled with these concerns internally. Her comments imply that the decision to proceed with Biden’s reelection campaign and subsequent book release may be viewed by some within the party as a continuation of a strategy to manage, rather than resolve, questions about his leadership capabilities. As the book’s release approaches, the ensuing public discourse is likely to remain intense, reflecting the deep divisions and ongoing discussions about the future direction of the Democratic Party and its leadership.
