A fresh take on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved “Little House on the Prairie” series is set to debut on Netflix on July 9, aiming to introduce the 19th-century frontier tales to a new audience. Actor Warren Christie, who takes on the role of John Edwards, acknowledged the significant legacy attached to the “Little House” name.

Stepping into a Cherished Legacy

“You see the name, ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ and it obviously carries a certain history to it, a certain cachet,” Christie shared. He described being impressed by the writing and scope of the initial episodes, which quickly drew him into the character of Edwards.

John Edwards, known in the books simply as Mr. Edwards, becomes a close confidant of the Ingalls family. Described by Netflix as a gregarious and somewhat mysterious Civil War veteran from Tennessee, the character is noted for capturing the attention of many women in the county. In the iconic 1970s television adaptation, this role was memorably portrayed by Victor French.

A “Reimagining” for a Modern Era

Netflix positions this new series as a “reimagining” of Wilder’s novels, distinct from a direct reboot of the original television show. Christie admitted that while he wasn’t intimately familiar with the books when first approached, the script and his character’s arc resonated deeply.

“When we meet John Edwards, he’s not in the greatest of spots,” Christie explained. “He’s lost his family, he’s a veteran, he has got some other problems he is dealing with, and then happens to meet this family who, I think, reminds him that there is hope, reminds him of what things can be. They bring him into the fold, and it starts to help him to live again, really. He sees the joy in what they have, and I think he sees potential and hope and community.”

Respect for the Source, Vision for the Future

Christie expressed confidence that fans of the original books will find much to appreciate in the new adaptation. He highlighted showrunner Rebecca Sonneshine’s deep affection for the stories from her own childhood, noting her approach was one of immense respect for Wilder’s novels while still forging a distinct vision for the series.

“If you’re a true fan of a book, we did everything we could to make sure that that storytelling was told in the right way,” Christie stated. “I think it was never lost on any of us how special it was to be a part of this world and this universe. It’s huge, and it means a lot to people. And so we’re very proud of the show.”

Wholesome Entertainment for All Ages

Netflix intends for the series to be a cornerstone of its “wholesome” and “heartwarming” content offerings, joining other popular shows like “Virgin River” and “Sweet Magnolias.” Christie believes the show, despite its beautiful cinematography, is fundamentally designed for families to enjoy together.

“What I hope it offers is multi-generational viewing,” he remarked. “I hope at the end of the day what we’ve done is created a really exciting world that multiple generations can share and enjoy together. And it’s the underlying thing of the whole show, which is community.”
