Maple Leafs Select Gavin McKenna First Overall in 2026 NHL Draft

The highly anticipated 2026 NHL Draft commenced Friday evening at Buffalo’s KeyBank Center. While draft nights often bring unexpected turns, the top selection followed a widely predicted path. The Toronto Maple Leafs, having secured the first overall pick following a challenging 2025-26 season, utilized this opportunity to select Gavin McKenna, a standout player from Penn State University.

McKenna, an 18-year-old hailing from Whitehorse, Yukon, has been consistently viewed as the premier talent in the 2026 draft class for an extended period. Despite the team’s general reticence regarding their plans, even after General Manager John Chayka met with McKenna at his home, the selection was widely anticipated. The announcement of McKenna’s name by the Maple Leafs was a foregone conclusion for many observers.

The Toronto Maple Leafs indeed face several areas requiring reinforcement. Goaltending remains a question mark, and the defensive corps could benefit from increased physicality. This year’s draft pool included several prospects who could have addressed these needs, such as Albert Smits from Europe and Chase Reid of the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. However, McKenna represents the type of elite offensive talent that teams often prioritize, irrespective of immediate positional needs.

McKenna’s Impressive Collegiate Performance

During his freshman season at Penn State, McKenna recorded an impressive 51 points, with 15 goals and 36 assists, in just 35 games. This performance suggests he possesses the offensive upside to significantly bolster the Maple Leafs’ secondary scoring lines, even if he doesn’t immediately slot into a top-line role.

The young forward is expected to make an immediate impact as the Maple Leafs aim to rebound under new coach Jim Hiller. McKenna has demonstrated an ability to handle significant attention and navigate considerable off-ice distractions throughout his career, which has evidently prepared him for the pressures of being a top draft pick.

Early Draft Selections

Following McKenna’s selection by Toronto, the San Jose Sharks picked Sweden’s Ivar Stenberg with the second overall selection. The Vancouver Canucks then used the third pick to select Caleb Malhotra, the son of former NHL player and current Canucks coach Manny Malhotra.
