ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller has announced he is stepping away from his role indefinitely to focus on recovery following a severe car accident that resulted in the amputation of his left arm. The announcement comes as the Missouri Attorney General’s office has confirmed an ongoing investigation into allegations concerning Miller’s management of fantasy football leagues.

A Devastating Accident and Its Aftermath

The incident that led to Miller’s current situation occurred last month. While details surrounding the crash remain somewhat sparse, it is known that Miller sustained critical injuries. In an update posted on X (formerly Twitter) on June 23, Miller shared that he was airlifted to Mercy Hospital after the accident in Missouri. He detailed the significant injuries, including multiple fractures and broken ribs, and disclosed the life-saving necessity of amputating his left arm. He also mentioned undergoing surgeries on his femur and patella, with surgeons managing to save his left leg.

Miller expressed his intention to focus entirely on healing and recovery, stating, “To best focus on my healing and recovery, I’m stepping away indefinitely and will be placed on leave from ESPN.” He concluded his post by thanking supporters for their well wishes and prayers.

The news of his accident and subsequent recovery efforts has drawn supportive messages from colleagues and former players. Adam Schefter offered his best wishes for a speedy recovery, and former Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas recalled Miller’s past support, adding, “Hopefully I can do the same for you boss.” Notably, Miller restricted replies on his post to “only some accounts,” a move that contrasted with previous updates about his accident which were open to public comment and often included discussions about the unfolding allegations.

Allegations Surface Amidst Recovery

Concurrently with Miller’s accident and recovery, a significant number of accusations emerged regarding his involvement in organizing and managing numerous fantasy football leagues. Reports indicate that Miller served as commissioner for a substantial number of leagues, reportedly 91 during the last season alone, according to the fantasy platform Sleeper.

A viral Reddit thread brought these allegations to light, with numerous individuals who had participated in leagues run by Miller sharing similar accounts. The core of the accusations suggests that Miller would establish leagues, often advertising them with the promise that a portion of the entry fees would be donated to charity. However, many participants claim that after the league commenced or concluded, Miller became unresponsive. These accounts frequently mention prolonged delays or a complete failure to provide payouts to league winners, and a lack of transparency regarding the promised charitable donations.

One widely shared post on Reddit articulated this issue: “Anyone in a league run by ESPN’s Matt Miller and not get paid as a winner? He has ghosted ours since the championship and provided 0 communication on what funds went to charity/providing payouts to the winners. I’ve seen a few others in the same boat and wanted to see if this is a wider spread problem than a couple leagues.”

Adding a layer of complexity, some individuals who had not received payouts reported being paid after Miller’s accident and after a GoFundMe campaign for his medical expenses had been established. The GoFundMe, initially set at $10,000, saw its goal revised upwards to $55,000 and eventually paused at approximately $51,000.

Official Investigation Underway

The growing number of complaints prompted action from the Missouri Attorney General’s office. In early July, the office confirmed to Awful Announcing that it had opened an investigation into the matter. The Attorney General’s office is actively seeking information from anyone with relevant details, regardless of their residency. Individuals can file consumer complaints online or by contacting the Consumer Protection team directly.

As of his latest update, Miller remains hospitalized and has not directly addressed the specific allegations or the ongoing investigation. His decision to step away from ESPN appears to be a measure to concentrate fully on his physical rehabilitation and navigate the personal challenges stemming from the accident and its consequences.
