Mike Mazzei, a former Oklahoma state senator and financial planner, has clinched the Republican nomination for governor in Oklahoma following a primary runoff election held Tuesday evening. His victory, bolstered by an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, positions him as the strong favorite to become the state’s next chief executive in the upcoming general election.

A Contentious Path to Nomination

Mazzei’s win came after a hard-fought contest against incumbent Oklahoma Attorney General Genter Drummond. The race was not only a battle between two candidates but also a proxy for a significant political feud between Drummond and outgoing Governor Kevin Stitt. Governor Stitt, who is term-limited and cannot seek re-election, had publicly backed Mazzei, viewing him as the ideal successor to continue his pro-business agenda. Stitt and Drummond had a well-documented history of public disagreements, including disputes over lawsuits and sharp criticisms leveled against each other. Stitt had notably referred to Drummond as a “longtime political enemy” in past statements.

The core of the conflict between Stitt and Drummond revolved around Drummond’s investigations into Oklahoma poultry companies. Drummond alleged decades of phosphorus pollution in the state’s water supplies, while Stitt countered that these actions constituted an overreach of the attorney general’s authority and could jeopardize jobs and the state’s vital agricultural industry.

Trump’s Influence and Mazzei’s Platform

The endorsement from former President Donald Trump proved to be a significant factor in Mazzei’s campaign. Trump, who labeled Mazzei a “MAGA warrior,” highlighted Mazzei’s business background and experience in state government, including his roles as Chairman of the State Senate Finance Committee and Oklahoma’s Secretary of Budget. In a post on Truth Social, Trump emphasized Mazzei’s understanding of “AMERICA FIRST Policies” aimed at economic growth, job creation, tax reduction, and energy dominance.

Mazzei’s campaign platform centered on several key promises, including a detailed plan to eliminate Oklahoma’s state income tax over six years and to abolish property taxes for seniors and veterans. He also advocated for measures to prevent foreign nationals from acquiring state land, enhance the education system, and ensure greater accountability in government spending. Mazzei sought to differentiate himself from Drummond by portraying his opponent as someone who favored expanding government and raising taxes, stating, “He doesn’t understand money and finance. Crunching numbers is a skill you pick up when you earn your wealth rather than inherit it.”

Drummond’s Record and Campaign Stance

Genter Drummond, a rancher and former fighter pilot, ran his campaign emphasizing his record as attorney general. His website highlighted his efforts in confronting Chinese criminal operations involved in illegal marijuana cultivation and enforcing immigration laws. Drummond positioned himself as a staunch defender of freedom and values, stating in campaign materials, “As a tough-on-crime attorney general and decorated fighter pilot, I have proven I will always fight for our freedom and defend our values.” He also aligned himself with Trump on border security, promising to “secure the border, deport illegals and stop the flow of drugs and crime.”

Support from Key Organizations

The Club for Growth, an organization advocating for lower taxes and free-market principles, provided substantial support to Mazzei’s campaign, contributing $9 million. David McIntosh, President of Club for Growth PAC, issued a statement praising Mazzei as a “principled conservative” who would champion lower taxes and reduced regulations. McIntosh also criticized Drummond, suggesting he prioritized “radical education bureaucrats” over families and school choice, implying that opposing “school freedom” leads to electoral defeat.

The General Election Ahead

With the primary hurdle cleared, Mike Mazzei is set to face Democratic nominee Cyndi Munson, the minority leader in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, in the general election on November 3. The outcome of this race will determine Oklahoma’s next governor, with Mazzei carrying the momentum from his primary victory and the significant backing of former President Trump.
