Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts believes athletes should focus on their athletic pursuits rather than being perceived as political figures or tools for others’ agendas. Betts, who previously visited the White House with the Dodgers after their 2024 World Series victory, will not be attending this year’s event. He cited the recent birth of his child as the reason for his absence, emphasizing that the decision was purely personal and not politically motivated.

Questioning Athlete’s Political Role

The four-time World Series champion expressed bewilderment at the public’s tendency to view athletes through a political lens. “I don’t know why the world sees athletes as these political figures or these people that can make change or these people that can do this, that, and the other. We go out and play our sport,” Betts told Fox News Digital in a recent interview. He acknowledged that while some athletes might be interested in politics, he questioned the broader societal expectation placed upon them. “I’m sure there are some guys in there that that love politics and want to be in it, but I’m not sure why the world sees us that way. But it kind of is what it is,” he added.

The ‘Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don’t’ Dilemma

Betts, an eight-time All-Star, highlighted the challenging position athletes find themselves in when decisions regarding White House visits arise. He described it as a no-win situation where any choice is likely to draw criticism from some quarter. “Athletes, we’re in positions where, you know, especially myself, where I’m kind of damned if I do or damned if I don’t,” Betts explained during an interview conducted on behalf of LGND, his glove company.

Recognizing that backlash was inevitable regardless of his decision, Betts opted to prioritize his personal well-being and family commitments. “So instead of trying to make other people happy, it’s let me just make myself happy, you know, make myself happy and get to spend some time with my family. Like I said, I got a new baby, so get to spend some time with her,” he stated. “I don’t really worry about it too much. Like I said, my stance is really that if I’m going to make everybody mad, make somebody mad, then at least I’m gonna make myself happy. So, that’s where I’m at.”

Betts’ Current Season and Career Outlook

Currently in the 13th season of his distinguished career, Betts has experienced a dip in performance this year compared to his usual standards. A native of Nashville, he boasts career statistics of a.288 batting average, 302 home runs, and 944 runs batted in. However, his current season numbers stand at a.235 average with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs.

The six-time Gold Glove winner is aiming to regain his form in the latter half of the season and contribute to the Dodgers’ pursuit of a third consecutive World Series title. His ability to bounce back will be crucial as the team navigates the remainder of the season and the playoffs.
