Angelica Carrillo, Public Information Officer for the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, stated that the Nancy Guthrie Task Force has observed a “slight increase in tips” since the two ransom notes were distributed to the media the previous week. She assured that every tip received has been thoroughly investigated.
The alleged ransom notes were reportedly sent to Guthrie’s family on February 2 and February 6. One of the messages addressed to “Savannah” conveyed that Nancy was being held captive but was safe, albeit frightened. The note explicitly stated she would be held for ransom and released unharmed upon payment.
Details within the notes also mentioned specific items and observations from the home. “She had a white smart watch on the floor of the foot of her bed and the white flood light in backyard was destroyed,” one message read. This detail about the watch, which was reportedly found on the floor of her bedroom, was known to authorities shortly after it was discovered on February 3, suggesting the sender might have had prior knowledge of the item’s location before it became public information.
Shift in Tone: A Tragic Turn
A subsequent message sent to the Guthrie family introduced a grim development, claiming that Nancy Guthrie had passed away. The purported note expressed regret, stating, “We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. We never intended to hurt her, that was not our intention. She perished shortly after she was taken. We believe it was heart related.”
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department released the content of these alleged notes in an effort to solicit information that could help identify the sender and shed light on Guthrie’s whereabouts and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

However, Pack also highlighted linguistic elements that he found compelling. “In my view, two things the language does support: He writes like a native English speaker. The idiom and the small connecting words are all in the right places, and at this length that is hard to fake,” he explained. This suggests the author possessed a natural command of the English language, making the notes potentially harder to fabricate convincingly.
