Kemar Downer, 40, an employee of Sayle’s Seafood, appeared in Nantucket District Court on Wednesday morning to face charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon resulting in serious bodily injury. His attorney, Rob Moriarty, stated that crucially, video evidence supports Downer’s account, portraying the events as an act of “complete and total self-defense.” Moriarty described the footage as highly beneficial to the defense’s case.
The altercation, reportedly stemming from a dispute over a woman, escalated rapidly. Moriarty detailed how the video shows the alleged victim, identified as an employee of Reis Trucking and described as physically larger than Downer, approaching from behind and striking his client multiple times in the back of the head. “He surprised him, punches him like three times in the back of the head,” Moriarty recounted. “Kind of knocks him into something. I can’t tell exactly what it was. He was leaning over at the time.”
The assault continued with the alleged victim reportedly kicking Downer several times before a knife was produced. “And then as he’s kicking him, that’s when I think the knife comes out,” Moriarty explained.

The stabbing took place Tuesday morning on South Beach Street, a prominent downtown thoroughfare situated near the Steamship Authority ferry terminal. This area is a central point for summer visitors arriving on Nantucket, often laden with beach gear and luggage, before dispersing into the island’s historic streets.
Nantucket police confirmed that officers were dispatched to South Beach Street, between Broad Street and Oak Street, at approximately 10:23 a.m. in response to a reported stabbing. The injured individual received immediate medical attention at the scene before being transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital.
Downer was subsequently released on $2,500 bail. Court orders mandate that he must avoid contact with the alleged victim, remain at least 25 yards from his residence, and wear a GPS tracking device.

According to a police report, Downer informed investigators that he was in the process of delivering juice to The Juice Bar when the Reis Trucking employee initiated the physical assault. He described turning around, being kicked, and then retrieving a pocketknife from his waistband, which he used defensively against the assailant.

Following the incident, the wounded man reportedly moved towards “The Strip” on Broad Street, an area known for its casual dining establishments, before returning to his vehicle near the end of South Beach Street, where bystanders provided assistance.
Nantucket police Sergeant Travis Ray apprehended Downer nearby on South Beach Street. He was reportedly found seated on a sidewalk.
