The U.S. Navy has identified Commander Gabriel Edwards as the sailor lost at sea following an emergency water landing of an MH-60S helicopter in the Arabian Sea. The incident occurred last week, and despite an extensive search, the Navy suspended efforts on Sunday, concluding that Edwards could not be recovered.
Sailor Lost After Helicopter Ditches in Arabian Sea
Commander Edwards, who commanded Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 (HSC-5), was aboard an MH-60S helicopter attached to the USS George H.W. Bush when it made an emergency landing on the water on July 1. While three of the four crew members were successfully rescued, Commander Edwards went missing. The Navy’s search for him spanned over 102 hours and covered an area exceeding 14,000 square miles before it was called off.
Rear Adm. Todd Cimicata, commander of Carrier Strike Group 10, expressed the deep sorrow of the entire team. “The thoughts and prayers of every member of the Carrier Strike Group 10 team are with the Edwards family,” Cimicata stated. He added, “While we are far from home, our heartfelt support remains at your side. Gabe’s legacy as a husband, father, friend and fearless leader will never be forgotten. We are thankful to each who carry a unique and indelible part of Gabe’s memory with us as we continue this important mission.”
A Life Dedicated to Service
Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao announced that Commander Edwards would be posthumously promoted to the rank of captain. “I am deeply grateful to every sailor and airman who took part in the search and who continue to support his family, friends, and shipmates,” Cao said in a statement.
Edwards, originally from Oakland, Oregon, had a distinguished career in the Navy. He graduated from Norfolk State University in 2006 and earned his Wings of Gold as a Navy helicopter pilot in 2008. He took command of HSC-5 in July 2025. Throughout his service, he accumulated more than 2,000 flight hours across various Navy helicopter platforms and had already been selected for promotion to captain.
Family’s Heartfelt Tribute
Commander Edwards is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and their two children. In a poignant statement, Rebecca Edwards shared her family’s profound gratitude for the extensive search efforts. “We are profoundly grateful to every Sailor, aviator, and Airman who devoted countless hours, extraordinary skill, and unwavering determination in the effort to bring Gabe home,” she said. “Gabe has dedicated his life to serving his country with honor, courage, and commitment,” she continued. “He led with humility, integrity, and compassion, always putting his people before himself. To those who served alongside him, he was a respected leader and mentor. To our family, he is the love of my life, an extraordinary father to his children, and the foundation of our home. His greatest joy was always his family.”
Ongoing Support and Investigation
HSC-5 is currently deployed to the Middle East aboard the USS George H.W. Bush. In the wake of the incident, the Navy has made mental health professionals, chaplains, and other support personnel available to assist members of the squadron and the ship’s crew. The cause of the emergency water landing is still under investigation, though initial reports indicate no hostile action was involved.
The loss of Commander Edwards is a somber reminder of the inherent risks faced by those serving in the armed forces. His dedication, leadership, and personal sacrifices are recognized by his command, his colleagues, and his grieving family.
