California Governor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, have enlisted the services of Abbe Lowell, a prominent Washington D.C. defense attorney notably known for representing Hunter Biden, as federal investigators examine financial and nonprofit activities connected to the First Partner. This move comes as a separate federal fraud case involves the governor’s former chief of staff.

Legal Counsel Secured Amid Scrutiny

The decision to bring on Lowell, a seasoned white-collar defense lawyer, signals a significant development as federal scrutiny intensifies. Lowell boasts a distinguished career, having previously served as chief minority counsel for House Democrats during former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment proceedings. His client roster is notably diverse, including high-profile figures who have found themselves at odds with former President Donald Trump’s administration, as well as other prominent political figures across the spectrum.

Governor Newsom confirmed the engagement of Lowell’s counsel during a press conference on Tuesday. He characterized the ongoing federal investigations as a politically motivated “fishing expedition” specifically targeting him as one of President Trump’s most visible Democratic adversaries. Lowell’s extensive experience includes representing a wide array of political heavyweights, such as Hunter Biden, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, former Democratic Senators Bob Menendez and John Edwards, and an associate of Tom Barrack.

Investigations Target Newsom’s Inner Circle

According to reports citing a U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California source, at least two criminal inquiries are linked to Newsom’s family and political associates. These investigations reportedly originated from information provided by whistleblowers and individuals within Sacramento.

Focus on Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s Finances

One of the reported inquiries is focusing on tax-related matters concerning Jennifer Siebel Newsom. This investigation is examining financial arrangements tied to her nonprofit work and filmmaking endeavors. Reports suggest that nonprofits and a for-profit production company founded by Siebel Newsom are central to the federal examination of her charitable and business finances. The Justice Department and the FBI have not issued public statements regarding these investigations.

Among the organizations under scrutiny is The Representation Project, a nonprofit that federal tax records indicate has paid Siebel Newsom over $1.9 million in compensation. Additionally, this nonprofit reportedly awarded approximately $2.2 million in contracts to Girls Club Entertainment, a for-profit production company independently owned by Siebel Newsom.

Another organization identified is the California Partners Project, also founded by Siebel Newsom. State disclosures reveal that this nonprofit has received nearly $5.1 million in “behested payments” since 2020. Behested payments are defined as donations made at the request of an elected official for charitable, legislative, or governmental purposes, distinct from campaign contributions.

Former Chief of Staff’s Guilty Plea

The second federal inquiry reportedly centered on Dana Williamson, former chief of staff to Governor Newsom. Williamson subsequently pleaded guilty in a separate federal fraud case. Prosecutors indicated that this case stemmed from an investigation initiated during the Biden administration.

Governor’s Stance on Investigations

Governor Newsom and his wife have asserted that the current Justice Department is employing investigations as a retaliatory measure due to their public criticism of former President Trump and his political standing. Despite this, when asked about the origins of the probes in a recent interview, Siebel Newsom stated she was unaware of the specific details.

Newsom’s office has not responded to inquiries regarding whether he has been contacted by federal investigators concerning these or any other cases. However, during a press conference on Tuesday, Newsom expressed his belief that contact with federal investigators is inevitable. “It’s inevitable, come on,” Newsom remarked when questioned about potential contact. “Look at who we’re dealing with.”

The White House, when approached for comment, directed all questions to the Justice Department.

Abbe Lowell’s Notable Clientele

Abbe Lowell’s reputation as a formidable defense attorney is well-established. His past clients reflect a broad spectrum of political affiliations and high-stakes legal battles. Beyond Hunter Biden and members of the Trump family, Lowell has represented figures such as former Democratic Senators Bob Menendez and John Edwards. More recently, he has taken on clients who claim to have been targeted by the Trump administration, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, former Department of Homeland Security official Miles Taylor, and whistleblower attorney Mark Zaid.

Lowell himself did not provide comments when reached for questions prior to publication.
